Good question. If they are not signing till the next semester I would think you can not pay them for a team NIL. But in theory it's NIL not based on a specific team. Just another loop hole.

greyshirts aren't enrolled until winter so they aren't students, nor are they athletes.

But walk-ons are enrolled and on team.

Anyone can pay the tuition for a walk-on player now. So yes.....why give a scholly to a kicker or punter or long snapper if you can give those guys Walk-on spots and have a NIL deal pay for their college.

Yes--or if fought in court, yes. The whole point of NIL is courts decided that by law the NCAA cannot tell a player they cannot make money based on who they are -- i.e. companies paying players allegedly to use their image for advertising and the like. I can't imagine the NCAA trying to come in and make a rule that distinguishes scholarship and non-scholarship players, because the NIL court decisions had little to do with whether the individual being paid was a player or not.

So a walk-on with an attractive NIL deal won't miss not having a scholarship........?

The issue recruiting guys to greyshirt isn’t really the financial aid - it’s the fact that they don’t get to play the first year, nor do they get to practice until after the season.

Could you theoretically pay a guy enough through NIL deals to make that worthwhile? Sure. But I think it would raise some eyebrows.

I think most of these “creative” uses for NIL will turn into moot points one way or another. Either the NCAA is going to enforce the few NIL rules that do exist - meaning teams are going to get bent over for paying kids to walk on or greyshirt - or they’ll remove financial aid restrictions altogether and it’ll (eventually) turn into collective bargaining.

We are looking at the schools who are pushing the limits of NIL restrictions and saying “WTF why is LSU behind?” But make no mistake, those schools are taking risks. Texas comes to mind in particular.. the whole “Horns with Heart” thing looks like a pretty clear violation of NCAA rules and Texas state law. It hasn’t been in place long enough to assume it’s legal just because they are doing it, IMO.

You’d have to make it up thru NIL deal. But the biggest thing would be that a walk-on can practice and train with team. A grey shirt can’t.

There's no longer a need for a greyshirt. The team does not pay the players for NIL. NIL is NIL, it is based on the person, supposedly has nothing to do with the team.

So, BYU just had a sponsor who paid the full tuition for every walk-on on the team. We could and should do the same here. Signing limits don't matter if you get a kid to come to campus and he is paid for by other means. We have a lot of 3 stars out there in the state that we should be bringing in as walk-ons with an NIL sponsor paying them. I have suggested on the board several times that Walk-Ons should make that happen, it's just too obvious. Hell they would even have an ACTUAL REASON to sponsor those guys, it's in their name.

The only hang up with NIL for a greyshirt would depend on state laws. IDK about Louisiana but in Texas they can’t be in high school anymore in some states they have to be enrolled. The more important part that could get the NCAA up your arse is making sure the kid never received an official in home or visit.
