Man, I shouldn’t have read this thread because now I want to add a new rifle and caliber to the collection.

Can’t speak for the newer x-bolts but I love my browning a-bolt from the mid 90’s. It’s a tack driver and the action is smooth as silk. No need to ever replace it. Have the stainless stalker with boss in 270

These days, I think Bergara takes to pot at the "upper end" of the $1k range, however there are lots of sub $600 guns out there that will outshoot most any everyday hunter. Plus you can spend the extra on glass. I have been looking at the Bergaras along with the Howas lately. I had a savage 110 and a Tikka t3 hunter (loved them both) but ultimately sold 1 for a browning x-bolt in 26 nosler which I love even more and the other for a ruger 44 mag carbine which is probably my favorite of my 30+ guns I have.

Check out Sauer Rifles. I just bought a .243 Silver XT. It’s an absolutely tack driver. Mauser M18 are excellent rifles in that price range.

I own Brownings, Rugers , Remingtons, Marlin , Winchester M70 and a Mauser98 . I have shot Tikka, Savage and Weatherby. Throw out the 98 due to your budget and the Winchester M70 is heads and shoulders above the rest IMO.
