I heard that Lars was the Lou Pearlman of Metallica.

He put the whole thing together by finding the best musicians and songwriters and marketed the shite out of them.

I always wondered why the drummer that didn't write the songs had such a big role. It seems he was a marketing genius, as well as a damn fine drummer.

He’s a terrible drummer , relatively speaking.

Good information, just in case someone asks.

Thanks

I really thought that this was going to have something to do with him having a thing for boy band members, or maybe being a crook.

Not sure why anyone would want to be another Lou Pearlman.

Lou Pearlman had underage kids give him oral for record contracts, Lars is a douchebag but that's a pretty terrible comparison.

He put an ad in the paper and James responded.

Genius.

He also put up all of the money, handled all of the promotions, and is the driving force behind their success.
Don't over sell it though.

No, the music is. Band wouldnt be shite without those songs. Lars didn't write them, he kept time to them.

Thats like saying if one of the early band members got kicked out and didn't have Lars anymore, he wouldn't be able to find success on his own.

Plenty of talented musicians never make it. Promotions, connections, and money is a large part of it.

Was he a rich kid? Yes. Is he a super talent? No.
He started the band, paid for the promotions, set up the gigs, made the calls to the record companies, and handled the business aspect of the band.

Metallica doesn't exist without Lars. To underplay his part is short-sided.

That's so weird that him and James have songwriting credits on every Metallica song. Yeah he contributes nothing.

St. Anger is the only album that credits Lars with any lyrics....

Lars gets credit for his drums. He feels that is part of writing a song.

If footage exists of Lars teaching Kirk or James a scale, or explaining why a chord works better..id love to see it.

It may be a better band tbh. Imagine James, Mustaine, Cliff and Dave Lombardo or Vinnie Paul.

No but there's tons of interviews and footage of James making a riff and Lars arranging or counting the riff sequence different to make it flow. His writing credits have nothing to do with the drum parts.

Lars did seem to be the one who had the drive to really push to make Metallica successful. Yes, he put the add in the paper and James responded which was very lucky for Lars. But he then ran with that and pushed the band, especially early on. Lars can be a bit pushy...

As far as being a great drummer, I cannot agree. Just listened to those shows they did for their 40th anniversary. I truly do not know how James, Kirk and Rob stay together. The vids don't seem to be on YT anymore, but if you can find it, listen to Enter Sandman (night 2) when they go into the chorus. There are kids in High School that can play way better than that. He also speeds up and slows down dramatically at odd times. After 40 years I would have thought he'd have learned to play better than that.

What Lars does excel is arranging the riffs and parts that James writes. He is excellent at shaping that material and putting it together in ways that really work. I don't know that James would put his stuff together like Lars does. He's kind of like James's editor. And that's not diminishing his contributions. I really think what he does makes the stuff hang together better and is invaluable to Metallica's work.

This is complete bullshite. His peers and other musicians disagree wholeheartedly. This is just what has become to cool thing to say since the Lars hate started at the same time as that Napster bs.

fricking amateurs thinking they're edgy when they really look dumb as hell.
