With recent uptick in crime in EBR area, I’ve decided to piece together an AR pistol. Due to ammo shortages with .300 black, mine will be a 5.56 for now and when ammo shortages ease a bit, I’ll snag a .300 upper.

I’m thinking 10.5 inch barrel should give me a boost in “stopping power” but looking for input on what y’all feel are must haves on this build.

I’m debating an FRT trigger or WOT, folding stock, and a good optic. PSA has some really good sales right now.

What are some thoughts?

No, but I’m a multiple option kinda guy. If I’m using this thing then SHTF already and this needs to fit multiple roles. I’ve shot all kinds of guns for years. Im not worried about operating whatever I build.

Meh. It's loud, but that's about it. Pop a can on it, and it's all day fun.

I have a 10.5" 5.56 and a 10.5" 300BO. Both are relatively handy and fun to shoot.

y/t

16’ - average 3200 fps
10.5 - averages 2800 for
7.5 - averages 2400 fps.

The 10.5 is just an all around good option, imo

I have a 10.5” pistol build that is one of my truck guns.

Not sure what it means when another poster said it would kick your arse.

I'm going with 12.5 to get alittle bit more range out of it. Also I'm shooting 77gr.

Get a 10.3" from Andro Corps or a 12.5" from IWI instead of PSA.

In the process of building one myself. Gonna go with the 11.3” BA Hanson.

Yeah, a 10.5" barreled 223 Rem will have mild recoil, but it will be VERY loud. I've shot a bunch of 223 Rem rounds through a 14" Contender on prairie dog hunts and it was loud. I can't imagine how loud a 10.5" barrel would be.

My SHTF gun is a SBR with a 10.5” Noveske CHF barrel. Have a surefire RC2 can and ACOG with ACSS reticle. It’s about as perfect of a SHTF gun as I could come up with. It sits under the backseat of my crew cab.

My original barrel was 11” Sabre Defense. I bought it from a shop online from Los Angeles of all places in 2008. It was the first SBR build for me. They used to make barrels for tge military back 15 years ago. There barrels were top notch. Dumbass owners started selling machine guns illegally overseas and got busted.

I'll be watching the recs here as I've decided to build an AR pistol. Although I've shot a lot of rounds through the years, I'm a relative "newbie" to the AR platform. I have a Ruger AR in 5.56, but haven't shot it much. The land my cousin and I own and deer hunt on in SW AR has had an influx of wild hogs in the past 6 mos. We've thinned them out some during deer season, but will need to keep up the pressure during the off season. From what I've read thus far, I'll prob be better off shooting supersonics, but I'd like to give subs (Sierra 220 round nose) a try as well. I already have 300/221 dies and appropriate bullets. This is what I'm looking at so far:
-300 Blackout upper w/ a 12" barrel. I already have a SilencerCo Harvester 300 suppressor. Undecided on brand of barrel. Twist will be 1:7 or 1:8.
-Undecided on the lower. I want an accurate gun, but don't want to blow money needlessly on the lower. I'm thinking a good barrel and a decent lower should result in an accurate gun.
-Brace is also undecided, but I lean toward a simple one.
-From what I've read, I'll need a pistol- or carbine-length gas system.
-I'd like to get a kit that has all the necessary parts and not waste money on a stock trigger I'll replace. Undecided on the custom trigger. My cousin has previously done an AR rifle build and has the specialized tools he says I'll need.

Any other suggestions?

I've got a Sabre 16" on the first AR I bought. Great barrel other than the fact the engraving was done with by hand with a vibration engraver; it looks like a child did it. Doesn't show with the handguard, I just always thought it was funny. Apparently marking the caliber was something of an afterthought.

Love my mk18 (10.3) but if it's going to be your only one grab a 13.7 pin and weld and have a stock instead of a brace

Working on building my second now

Red dot or eotech are the go to unless you go lpvo route which my eyes aren't getting any better I'm grabbing for my next build

Not my only one. Mainly a vehicle rig to deal with uptick in blue city violence if needed.

I do want to get an SBR eventually.

Have you had bad luck with PSA? I checked both those companies out and PSA has one for $529 right now.

This would be a badass little gun to bust out during a hood rat shite convention.

A lower has exactly zero impact on accuracy unless it's just so loose you get a different sight picture each time. Any in-spec lower is going to give you the same accuracy.

- Aftermarket triggers are popular enough that you can get a lower parts kit without the trigger, although it doesn't save you much money.
- You just need a drift pin/punch set, no special tools
- It's not the only good choice but you'll be very happy with a Geissele SSA-E. Wait for a holiday sale; it's been a few years but I got my last one for $180 from either Midway or Primary Arms.
- The trigger will have a far, far greater impact on accuracy than your lower
- Don't be tempted by the price to buy an "improved" mil-spec trigger if you're looking for a better-than-stock trigger. You can polish those things all day long but you're fighting geometry. Either spend some money or just stay with mil-spec.

Thx for the good suggestions, Flats. I kinda suspected the lower wouldn't have much affect on accuracy, but it's really good to hear the confirmation.

Their QC is very inconsistent. You may get a good product at a great price or you may get a lemon.
The IWI I was referencing is the Zion AR pistol. 12.5" barrel with a midlength gas system and $699.
