Fishing with my dad in his boat in the middle of Chicot Lake, he pulled back to cast then as he came forward the rod slipped out of his hands into the lake. He looked at me and said “Go get it”.
I stripped down to my underwear and dove into cold, murky water. There was no way of retrieving the rod and reel as it sank instantly, the water was to brown to see through plus the lake is too deep to swim to the bottom.
Dumb of my dad telling me to go get it and dumber of me to jump in after it.

I'd guess I was about 13 years old. We had some farm ground about 20 minutes from where we lived. We had an old school Honda 3 wheeler and we'd load it up and take it out to the farm. On the way home he'd let me trail his pickup probably about 3/4 of the way home - dirt roads the whole way - doing about 50 mph.
It was just about just like this one - incredibly unsafe too lol

Back in the 60s our black and white console tv was acting up. So of course my dad aka Mr Fix It asked me to “bring me a wooden stick about a foot long” so he could tap on the tv tubes to find the bad one. Being the wise son that I was, I brought him a 12 inch wooden ruler. After about 20 seconds of taping tubes I heard a yell when he got shocked Neither of us noticed the metal straight edge in the ruler

What a great thread...so many memories! I was born in '62 and my Dad was a high school graduate who worked his way up to manage the tooling and machine shop at IBM while we also ran a small farm with crops, dairy cows, hogs, chickens, rabbits, everything lmao.
SOB could fix anything. And was old school hard arse.
So many memories, I remember being cussed out while holding the flashlight while we were rebuilding tractor engines on old IH and John Deere tractors. "WTF is wrong with you point it where I need to see!" LOL "And god damit anticipate what wrench I need, are you stupid???"
I was driving IH tandem trucks and old chevrolet pickups in 6th grade. Had mini bikes, go karts and motorcycles at 14. Lmao...such great times.
I remember one time I disrespected my Mom, old fart picked my up by my neck and threw me across the kitchen. One quick move and tossed me at least ten feet. Taught me to respect women and not be an a-hole.

I knew the lines of games when I was 7 or 8. I assumed everyone’s dad gambled.
Yeah I remember talking about the Superbowl with other kids and I asked what's the spread and they looked at me like what? My father was/is kinda a piece of work.

It was a 12 yard load of fill dirt (sand/clay) to move on a Saturday in 3rd grade. 2nd grade was helping muck out a foot of smelly mud in a friend's camp in Hackberry thanks to Hurricane Carla. We never used the camp, not once.
I can change points, condensor and plugs then adjust the timing with a timing light after numerous times holding the flashlight

4rd grade my grandfather had me haul the wood in a wheelbarrow from his sawing up a old pecan tree downed by Hurricane Betsy. It was about a 300 yard trip. That being said, he used a one man crosscut tree saw about 6 feet long to cut it up at 66 years old, with arthritis and at most 5'6" tall and wiry

My dad never had me do anything all that crazy but my grandfather taught me how to skin a catfish by putting it up next to a tree and hammering a nail through its head to hold it still. My mother was not pleased.

My dad took me to a Chinese restaurant that was also a night club when I was about 9 years old. They had these volcano drinks that came out in punch bowls with flames in the middle and they'd give you these really long straws to drink it.
He gave me a straw and ended up ringing the door bell and leaving me passed out on my mom's front porch a couple of hours later.

quote:A good life hack I learned was to always be as helpful as possible to my parents when it came to their alcohol. That’s how you get in position to levy a “tax” on the carriage of said alcohol. I was a sip stealing SOB and eventually they just got used to seeing me drink by the time I was like 14 and no questions were asked.
When walking into tiger stadium he would put his flask on me
