I'm actually impressed that an ArchBishop had the balls to hold someone of prominence accountable for their actions.

Rome seems to give each dioceses and the local bishop a lot of autonomy. Local customs also seem to drive a lot of canonical interpretation so the pope simply lets the bishops handle it. Rome cannot get involved in every scandal in every diocese. And despite Nancy being a big deal in America on the Catholic Church world stage she is hardly a blip. Rome has a lot more pressing needs than dealing with Nancy, like Ukraine, Chinese religious prisoners, trying to survive in the ME, etc.

Would be funny if Francis came out and did it as well. Despite everyone getting on him about his progressive leanings, he has been pretty orthodox in his approach to established doctrine. He would probably phrase it like this. I can forgive and give absolution to a victim of abortion especially if they repent. But what I cannot do is excuse the facilitator and advocate of the sinful act. They are living in active sin
