Ricardo Gathers, a 6-foot-8 forward from Reserve (La.) Riverside, says he and his family have talked to St. John’s about enrolling in 2011 instead of his original class of 2012. “We kind of brought it up,” Gathers said Thursday by phone from the NBA Top 100 Camp in Virginia. “It would be a great situation for me to improve my game. I don’t see myself getting better in high school so it’s just something I want to do.”

I doubt this will happen as he still talks about being in the 2012 class, and the guys who reclassify are busy taking a couple of summer classes to finish all their requirements. They aren't going to LA, Vegas, and NYC for AAU tournaments.

Still, it seems like he really likes St. John's.

quote:

Gathers said he is considering St. John’s, Texas, Arizona and LSU, with St. John’s and Texas leading the way. “St. John’s, they’re just showing the most love,” he said. “Kind of like they really want me. Coach Lav [Steve Lavin], he’s a good guy. He’s a got a great group of coaches right now. They’re the best situation besides Texas.”

Both schools with ties to Findlay Prep. I don't like that. He's mentioned going there before and I feel like those schools are going to pressure him even more. If he does, we definitely lose him.

Interesting take, I really hadn't thought of that angle.

Bubba and I have had friendly disagreements on St Johns. I think they have something real happening over there, he is taking more of a "wait and see" approach.

St Johns signed 9 players this year. Why would he want to make it 10?

Lavin failed at his last job, and had more resources and a weaker conference. I see no reason he will be better at St. Johns.

As far as Gathers, it's good to see him at least listing LSU. He wasn't a while back, but his list changes drastically all the time.

This 2011 switch is BS. I doubt he signs until spring.

Also, Adam Zagoria is a huge St. Johns homer. He formulates his questions to get Pro-St. Johns responses.

Define failed? He got fired but had 5 sweet 16's in 7 years and when he finally didn't get to the tourney they fired him. UCLA has pretty high standards but what Lavin did there isn't going to get you fired at 99% of colleges. It's pretty hilarious that you disparage Lavin's accomplishments and at the same time vehemently tout Trent's.

Not to speak for Bubba but I don't think he "touts" but "defends".

Either way and I don't mean this as a Trent bash either all I'm saying is you can't look at Lavin's record and scoff at it and then defend/tout/not scoff at Trent's record. Doubt Lavin turns St. John's into a powerhouse but they're going to be a good program.

I want Gathers at LSU, but I will not blame him for playing for Lavin over Johnson.

Sweet 16
During Lavin’s tenure as head coach, the Bruins qualified for six consecutive NCAA Tournaments (1997–2002). During this period, Lavin became one of two coaches (along with Duke’s Mike Krzyzewski) to have led his team to five NCAA Sweet 16s in six seasons. Lavin’s record in the first and second rounds of the NCAA tournament is 10-1. Lavin’s winning percentage (90.9%) in the first two rounds, is second only to Dean Smith in NCAA Tournament history. However, Lavin also coached the Bruins to their only loss in an NCAA tournament game played in the State of California (a 2002 loss to Missouri in San Jose).

Not sure this was a failure.

You kinda wish he did a little more with what he had though.

Yeah, but he never made it out the Sweet 16 other than his first year. He kind of lucked into the head coaching position to begin with. It seems like he got his first positions based on his dad's connections, and if Gottfried and Lorenzo Romar had just stayed around a few extra months, they would have been promoted for sure. Instead they ended up at Murray State and Pepperdine, while the guy who was below them got the UCLA job.

I think you could say that he has had more success than Trent, and I can understand why a guy would prefer to play at St. John's rather than LSU, even if he is from New Orleans. However, if I was Gathers, I think I would look at schools beyond St. John's, particularly Arizona and Texas. It would be great if he came to LSU, but if he makes an end of summer decision, I bet that the odds would be against Trent.

He got one guy out of Findlay right? That's good but nothing like the Canadian/Findlay pipeline Rick Barnes has going. And it also seems shady as hell.

If he goes to Findlay Texas and Zona are much more in play but mostly it just destroys LSU's chances.

Unlikely St. Johns is as good next year so that could hurt them.

Comparing Trent and Lavin is a joke. Lavin was at UCLA, one of the all-time programs with nearly unlimited resources. He also inherited them when they were strong.

For UCLA, he was a failure. Think of it in terms of LSU baseball or football. They're not too impressed making the final 16.

Outisde of Harrick's national title(I know how silly that sounds) Lavin's results were similar to Harrick. Also Stanford was pretty freaking good when Trent took over and he didn't keep them to that level either.

But if he gets similar results at St. John's he most definitely won't be a failure.
