Lawnmower Recommendations

I went lawnmower shopping today. I have about 6 acres to cut and the prices of those machines are up there. I have had a 42” gravely for 13 years, but it’s time to upgrade. I’m looking at scag, hustler, and bad boy for now. If anyone who has used these machines more than just residential have recommendations could point me in the right direction, I would greatly appreciate it.

Great insight! What do you recommend?

I have a scag freedom z pro 61” that’s 8 years old. I’ve kept up with the maintenance and it’s been a great machine.

Just don't buy anything from a big box store and you'll be alright.

I just bought an Exmark Radius 52. It has a cup holder.

I have had a Scag professional model for five years. So far so good. The Kubotas are just as good or better. 4 year warranty with Kubota and 3 year with Scag. I have six acres I am cutting also. Make sure you get the high end engine which usually involves buying the pro model. There are three grades of engines. Do your research.
Keep the maintenance up and they should last 10-12 years no problem.

I wish mine was purple and gold.

A used Toro is a better buy than 80% of brand new offerings

I have 20 acres, about the same as you to cut. Have a bad boy avenger 60", it does a great job. Zero complaints and zero issues and I got it from tractor supply. If you buy bad boy, all dealers honor the machine as if you bought it from them, I confirmed.
I cut a rough patch too, hills, rocks, around a pond. Good machine.

Ive had a 52” Bobcat for about 10 years. No major issues. MIL has had a gravely for 4 years with no issues. My dad has had a 60” Bad Boy from tractor supply for approximately 12 years. He may be in the market for something new this year.
Biggest selling point for me was the Kawasaki motor. All the lawn services recommended it followed by kohler.

I’ve had a John Deere zero turn for 14 years. Still running but likely won’t buy another simply due to having it serviced by the local dealership. I’ve looked at bad boys only because of the heavy gage deck and framing. Also if you buy a bad boy pay the extra for the Kawasaki engine versus the Kohler. I’ve researched it a lot. Can’t go wrong with an Exmark but yes they are pricey. Stay away from the junk Toro, Cub cadet and other box store crap.

My mother recently got a Spartan and it’s a beast, but all I’ve ever known is a push mower so my opinion might be swayed.

Keep this in mind…
There is 1 company that makes ALL of the hydrostatic transmissions.
Basically, mower companies are like bicycle companies in that they all use common components.
Just get the one you think is the best deal.
