For those who grew up during the movie rental store years, what were your favorite movies to rent as a child?

I remember renting the same movies over and over again.

For me, it was Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, the first motion picture, and I remember renting Teen Wolf a lot. I was probably 9 or 10 years old at the time.

All the Ernest movies, all the 3 Ninjas movies, Batman (89), Home Alone 1 and 2, and a plethora of cheesy, straight-to-the-rental-store classics.

Goodfellas was a movie I remember people renting over and over. Maybe I'm misremembering this but it seems like that movie passed quickly through the theatre without much notice or fanfare then exploded in popularity when it was released on video.

Resevoir Dogs was another one. Nobody knew who QT was and Resevoir Dogs was a low budget indie movie that probably didn't get much of a wide theatrical release. At some point word circulated that Resevoir Dogs was this cool underground masterpiece that you had to see. But the local Blockbuster only had one copy and it was always checked out. So anytime you went there you had to go check if it was on the shelf and when you finally got your hands on it, it was like you found a diamond.

When in doubt, you could always go with John Hughes, Oliver Stone, a horror movie or the latest Action and Adventure movie from the New Release section.

I still have a vivid memory of getting out of school for summer in 3rd or 4th grade and being so damn excited to go to Blockbuster and rent The Lost World Jurassic Park. Not that great of a movie but I loved it when I first watched it that day.

Between 9 and 12 I was super into horror, especially 60s and 70s horror. I got a kick out of the fact that my friends weren't "allowed" to see those types of movies.

Growing up, we didn't rent many movies. The first VHS I rented on my own account was The Replacements. I think the last Blockbuster VHS I rented was Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back. The last verified new release I can remember was Super Troopers. Looks like I was never a part of the rental market.

I remember always going straight to the Godzilla movies when we went to the video store when I was little.

I still don't fully understand the fascination, that hardly ever ended up being what we rented (maybe once or twice), but I was like a moth to the flame

The same one that every middle school/high school/college kid paused at the same exact moment OVER and OVER again --

Blockbuster actually reported that they had to replace this movie more than any other because it had been ruined through pausing and putting through slow motion at the same exact spot.

We rented a TON of movies. It's why my knowledge of 80s movies dwarfs my knowledge of current ones.
