In terms of visual aesthetics, it's probably the greatest film ever made.

Saw it in a theater when it first was released. It was visually stunning.

But the story was so slow that the crowd practically fell asleep.

I go back and forth between Strangelove and Barry Lyndon, but the latter is probably easily the most beautiful film ever made (besides maybe Days of Heaven).

Regardless, the first half of Barry Lyndon is a masterpiece. The second half is just too damn depressing to watch that often.

NASA built special cameras for Kubrick to use so he could rely on only Natural lighting. It's visually his most beautiful film which is saying something considering the cinematography of 2001, Shining and Eyes Wide Shut etc. are incredible.

When it comes to period pieces The Draughtsman's Contract looks as good and is a much better movie.

Always thought it was kinda weird. He was such an unlikeable character to me.

If by underrated you mean unknown/unwatched by the superhero movie crowd, then yes. If you mean overall, no. It lost best pic to One Flew Over the Cuckoos Nest, and was nominated along w/ Jaws, Dog Day Afternoon, and Nashville (also "super underrated" according to your criteria).
