Have you ever known a drunk driver who killed someone?

We always hear the other, more tragic side of the story from the victim’s family and that’s understood.
As someone who’s known a teenager recently killed by a drunk driver, I’d like to hear the other sides of the story.
What became of them? What kind of people were they? Did they change? Did they go on to live normal lives?

In college I knew a guy who led cops on a 20+ mile chase and ended up totaling his car
By some miracle, no one was killed

Yep. The owner of the liquor store in south Austin my dad would frequent when it was a smaller community.
Got 13 years. Messed his young kids up pretty bad at the time.

I know a guy that killed someone while they were in college. They got less than 3 years. By all accounts they are an outstanding member of society now. Married, gainfully employed, has multiple kids. Has had no further missteps in life..

I had to serve 48 hours once for dwi. Time served after the rest. So I had to stick it 6 hours in the city court holding cell. I was alone in the cell and this kid gets put in with me. Dude just got sentenced for killing his passengers after he flipped his truck by that Zachary water ski school. Very surreal watching this dudes emotions and processing it all. Very awkward to say the least. He had physical scars and was in pain from that wreck which happened like a year or two before the sentencing.
I have tried to find the wreck to no avail to see what happened with this dude. But the 2 hour experience of being in the cell after being sentenced was something I’ll never forget

I’ve known a couple that ended up being sentenced to 20 years prison.
I know another who avoided prison and is now an upstanding citizen who doesn’t drink at all. There were mitigating circumstances in his case, from what I understand—the alcohol didn’t cause the collision.

Yup. And all sorts of bad stories. Not really worth typing them out, that’s stuff I hope never passes through my life again. Kids are dumb, only some of us make it out with scars that heal.

So you never even found out what he was sentenced to?

Middle school teacher.
He also sadly killed himself in the crash as well, albeit several days later.
Also my exMIL

Yep fun person all around. Person hit was not in the right place as a pedestrian (dark road, 45 mph county curve rd .. out near driving.. coulda happened to a sober person) they changed speed limit after this to 35. Served about 6 years. Haven’t heard a peep since so no idea how they are now. Pretty much doesn’t exist

This guy was on his 3rd or 4th offense and killed a family. He won’t breathe free air for a long time. I hadn’t seen the guy more than once since hs. He really went off the deep end after losing his mom and his long time gf breaking up with him in the span of like 2 weeks. Then, just a couple months later knocking a girl up and getting expelled for showing up at school drunk. Dude pretty much crawled inside a bottle and never came out. I hope he finds the help he needs in prison and becomes a better man for it.

I have a friend who was drunk and wrecked a side by side, a 22 year old girl was thrown off and she died.
The driver is serving a 30 day sentence with 4,000 hours of community service and 5 years probation. He also has to serve the day she died for 5 years.
He’s one of the best men I know and is doing extremely well. He Hasn’t drank a drop since. He has a beautiful wife and 2 daughters.

Friend of mine. We were in 9th grade. His gf was in 10th. They had been out at a party, gf driving them home. Hit car head on, killed a woman. The woman was mom of another high school kid from down the road. My friend and his gf never did a day in jail.. ended up getting married, have 2 kids now. And he a buisness owner.

One, and old hunting/fishing buddy.
He was involved in a head on collision circa 98’ or so. He was driving an old Mazda pickup; the victim was in a lifted pickup who basically went airborne after using his truck as a ramp. Victim died at the scene after being ejected. Toxicology showed both were under the influence of marijuana and alcohol. He did a little more than a year behind bars.
In this case; shite got much worse for him after getting out. Progressively more and more socially isolated. Substance abuse was worse than ever. Alcohol and drug abuse progressed. Developed a meth habit. Was a family affair, had two teenagers at the house who used with him. One ultimately overdosed and died. He left town and I haven’t heard from him in a decade or more. Still hear from his daughter; she’s done great. The death of her brother shook her into turning it around.
I know some get better, in this case they didn’t.
