The statement came Saturday morning and blamed “human error” for the shootdown.
The jetliner, a Boeing 737 operated by Ukrainian International Airlines, went down on the outskirts of Tehran during takeoff just hours after Iran launched a barrage of missiles at U.S. forces.
Iran had denied for several days that a missile downed the aircraft. But then the U.S. and Canada, citing intelligence, said they believe Iran shot down the aircraft.
The plane, en route to the Ukrainian capital of Kyiv, was carrying 167 passengers and nine crew members from several countries, including 82 Iranians, at least 63 Canadians and 11 Ukrainians, according to officials.

Guess they couldn’t deny it anymore. No planes should have been allowed to take off or land during that time to begin with.

Saw an article this morning that framed it as a stray missile.

I doubt Iran really wanted to shoot down a Ukrainian plane with Iranians on board. Iran is probably just that incompetent to do it on accident.

this was the first leg of a flight which connected in Kiev and then went to Toronto
Canada has something like the second highest Iranian population in the world; many heading back to university after winter break

Their tweet earlier that day where they told us to remember that we shot down one of their planes in the 80s was just a huge coincidence.

The United States jammed the Iranian militaries radar system after the last strike. Iran ground forces, in a blind panic, mistook the commercial jet for a U.S. military plane.
