So this dude has already been arrested for either murdering someone or trying to murder someone three times and he's still on the streets. Great job, Baton Rouge.

Video surveillance from Benny's Bar on North Street shows that Derrick Bryant, 45, initiated a physical altercation the night of Nov. 13, according to Bryant's arrest report. The fight continued into another part of the bar not visible on the cameras, but the victim reemerged visibly bleeding.
Baton Rouge police responded to the scene and found the victim with multiple stab wounds on his back and the front of his torso. The victim told officers he had been involved in a fight with an unknown subject.
Police wrote in the report that the victim's medical records indicated he suffered a collapsed lung as a result of his injuries.
Then Sunday night, the victim spotted the man, who was later identified as Bryant, at another bar and told police the man was the aggressor in the November fight. Bryant was taken into custody.
Police said Bryant admitted to fighting with the victim but said he was simply defending himself after being attacked and denied stabbing anyone. Bryant's account of the incident contradicted video surveillance, police wrote in his arrest report.

Officers also found that Bryant has an extensive violent criminal history, including arrests on first-degree murder in 1992 and attempted first-degree murder in 1997. He was convicted of attempted second-degree murder and manslaughter in 1998.

“How can we solve the crime problem in this country?”
Such a tough question. Not sure I can solve it.
Oh wait, yes I can. Arrest, convict and sentence criminals to extremely lengthy sentences.

Probably why he didn't care if he got arrested again, because he knew it would be a slap on the wrist and he will be back running the streets again.

Not sure what the law was in 1998, but manslaughter is 0-40 and att murder is 0-50 (I think). No mandatory sentences for a fist offender.
