How are you going to keep your tent cool and shaded?

I don’t think that would pass my subdivision by laws. But you do you.

The shade has a moderately positive effect but redirecting the hot air back down onto the condenser coils more than offsets it.

I’m so glad I don’t have to worry about that regardless.

Need better landscaping on the side of your house. You have only 1 anemic scrub shrub, and it looks from the picture angle to be too close to the ac unit. Sad.

Does it though? Seems like we'd see a lot more people doing it.

You’d be better off putting a sprinkler out there, it’d water that thirsty arse excuse for a lawn and cool off and clean that overworked unit.

The sunlight hitting directly on the coils will reduce the effectiveness of the heat transfer but in general modern units are designed to cope with that because most people today have clearcut lots and the condenser is often put where it gets sun much of the day. The problem with the OP's "invention" is it blocks the upward movement of the hot exhaust air which gets recirculated through the condenser coil which presents a situation that units are not designed for so they operate with the efficiency of a unit in much hotter ambient air temps. What the OP is doing is counterproductive.
