Rivian R1T owner Chris Apfelstadt experienced an unexpected financial shock after a seemingly minor rear-end collision in February. Although the damage appeared limited to the rear bumper, the repair costs escalated to $42,000 when he took his vehicle to a certified Rivian Automotive Inc. repair shop.

Apfelstadt initially received an estimate of $1,600 from the other driver’s insurance company, leading him to expect a manageable repair bill. The reality proved to be far costlier when he entrusted his Rivian to one of three certified repair shops in central Ohio. According to Apfelstadt, the repair facility provided him with a meticulous cost breakdown, documenting each step of the repair process and furnishing photographic evidence. The resulting repair expenses, combined with Apfelstadt’s rental car costs, nearly reached the $50,000 limit of the other driver’s insurance payout.

Electric cars are cons for people who let emotions get in the way of essential decisions, aka pseudo-intellectuals.

Yes he also took it to “one of 3 certified repair shops.” Those shops probably charge crazy prices.

If it is strictly body damage pretty much and body shop could repair it. There is nothing that makes a Rivian magical to where only a “Rivan” body shop could work on it. Now with it being so new, replacement parts may be tough to source and are likely expensive.

This is why:

Apfelstadt clarified, “The back quarter panel was damaged, and that piece spans from the tailgate to the front windshield.”

Correct. And this has nothing to do with it being an EV. Other Rivian owners have had the same thing done for much cheaper. It's more availability.

I would bet that with the crazy technology that the electric vehicles are putting into the vehicles that it’s stupid expensive to replace anything.

It would be like owning a Hennessy Motors truck and getting in a wreck. The thing is actually bulletproof

That appears to be some German-level of over-engineering, actual Germans not OT germans.

Seems like a bad design if you have to replace half of the truck from a fender bender

And it’s likely aluminum which would mean that you basically need to replace the whole piece - in this case the side.

What a stupid design. I’m sure that will change with the next model.

It is your opinion that EVs are a net gain from an environmental standpoint?

From a financial standpoint re. V gasoline?
