Are VW's Really Crappy?

The wife wants a 2023 Tiguan or Taos, but after doing a little research, they seem to be considered unreliable.
They come with a 4 yr bumper to bumper warranty instead of 3. I'll admit, I think they look better than a comparably priced 23 Honda CRV Sport, which only comes as a hybrid, or a Mazda CX50 and VW seems able to actually negotiate off of MSRP unlike it's Japanese counterparts, but I don't want something that will be constantly in the shop.
She typically drives between 7k-10k miles a year give or take.
What's the boards opinion on VW? Any actual first hand experience?

Have a 5 year old one just routine maintenance no repairs so far.

You can get a big arse V8 Toyota sequoia and spend less over a WAY longer life.
You'll be wishing your Toyota would blow up so you'd have an excuse to get a shiny new car, but it won't.

I strangely kind of like them, but never had one. I'm sure there is some unexpected caveat to owning one that I probably don't know about

They look great. I will admit
Got my mom a mazda cx5. Its really not bad though.

Don’t do it. You’ve been warned because I care.

I will also say this for mazda
They do a full video of every service and send it to her cellphone. A complete walk around and show them doing the service. I dont get that with my new jeep or any ford or chevy I owned. My tacoma was bought used and I do all the work on it myself

I wouldn’t say they are crappy but the maintenance costs tend to mount up faster once they are out of warranty. Maybe they are better now but when I had one, the quality of their components weren’t that great, little things like plastic trim pieces, buttons, switches and other nit picky stuff just broke all the time. There’s not many mechanics that work on them either.

I’m sad they discontinued the VW Bug. I’d never own one, even if you gave it to me. But they’re becoming more and more scarce and the wife and I relentlessly play “punch bug” wherever we go and it’s getting harder and harder to find them.

She wants luxury, you want Mazda. You are going to lose this battle, regardless of which Consumer Reports reliability reviews you show her.
FFS, are you living in 1974? I've owned a Nissan with 100k and two Fords and have never taken in any of them for anything other than routine service. Modern cars are fine, just avoid the first model year (meaning the company does a redesign, updates engines, etc.) and you'll be fine with anything.
For German cars, it's mostly about Mercedes and Audi round my parts, but I'd never suggest buying a German car again (ex wife bought a Mercedes.) Their user experience with their technology is circa Ford 2010. They throw up scary looking error codes for "mandatory" services that are crap.
However, the Japanese, particularly Toyota, are maniacal about reusing parts between models. What this means is that you're not just rolling with whatever BS engine Chevy puts in the Tahoe, the engine you're buying from a Japanese brand is used in not just the 10000 CRVs they sell in the US, it's used in five other models as well.
You can also try Genesis, their stuff is sexy.

DON'T! Had a Jetta diesel with multiple issues... Twice, I had to be towed to the dealer for cluster replacements to "fix" their immobilizer bugs. After a routine service trip to the dealer, I noticed that my odometer wasn't ticking up. They denied the issue, but it was well documented on VW forums. Thank goodness VW bought the damned thing back from me in the diesel-gate recall, because I don't think I could have sold it for decent money.

Like all Grrman cars engineering and initial build quality is high.
Any maintenance or repair not covered by warranty will be ridiculously expensive.
If you drive it beyond the original owners warranty all maintenance e or repair will be ridiculously expensive.
Some Audis and VWs are built in Ukraine. Avoid those at all costs
Happy motoring.

I have a 2007 VW with 167k miles that hasn’t been any more expensive to maintain than my wife’s Honda.

I wanted an atlas but vw only sells the 8 seaters in Europe

German cars are great, but you gotta be willing to pay or work on them yourself after that short 4 year warranty.
Brutally expensive labor and make no mistake, they will need work. The German pitchfork does not come with any lube.

German cars are for people that can afford to continue leasing a new one under full warranty.

Don’t run a Jetta against a S2000, that’s all I’ve got
