Comparing MJ and Lebron

Lebron will never be GOAT. It’s Jordan, end of discussion.
I really dislike Lebron. I pulled against Mike pretty much his whole career. I grew up a Barkley fan. But like I did with MJ towards the end of his career, I’m starting to appreciate that we are watching LBJ be great.
He keeps his body in the best shape better than anyone. He’s the GOAT of that.
I guess I’ve let Lebron enter the discussion of the all time greats, but he will never top MJ.

There is no comparison. One played when defense was a thing in the NBA and had to earn his points.

One played when defense was told what they could and couldn’t do to limit a player

How gracious of you.

I think so too.
I still dislike Lebron. Remember early in Lebrons career when he was spotted in a nightclub pretending to shoot a basketball so people would notice him?
That was terrible.

Thanks for informing us. We have been waiting patiently for years for this input

I know this is an old person talking point, but it really is just so absurd. Cheap and dirty fouls does not equal good defense. Some of his highlights also look better because the paints are packed because no one could shoot outside of a few players. Watch a full game from then and you’ll be truly amazed at how bad the defense is compared to today’s game.

Lebron had a conniption fit for that slap at the end of the game last week. Imagine if he had to go through an Eastern Conference final against the Pacers or the Knicks of the 90’s?

I’m not arguing Lebron is not a child sometimes. I’m saying defense is significantly better in today’s NBA.

Better defense TODAY???
They dont even try to play defense. Have you watched a game in years vs the 90's?

Both played in two totally different eras
Jordan got absolutely clobbered in that era of basketball but still somehow managed to stay healthy
Lebron plays in the era of I'll sit this one out for some injury no one has ever heard of - abductor strain
Could Lebron have thrived in that era - no question
Could Jordan have thrived in this era - no question
Jordan couldn't put together super teams like they do now
It's impressive that Lebron has won with three different teams
It's amazing that Jordan left the game and then came back and won three straight again
Lebron is coddled by his superiors, Jordan's superiors were the biggest dopes on the planet and he won despite the meddling of owners
You also have to keep in mind Jordan was forced to play in college and developed his game in that arena

What eats up the Lebron fanboys on here is they know he will have next to no cultural impact once he's out of the league. MJ's Jumpman brand is doing billions of dollars of business every year two decades after he last played in the league. Five years after LBJ is gone no one will even mention his name, much less buy product with his brand.

You must have some intense disdain for Lebron to believe this.

Both MJ and LeBron are stand-alone, all-time great players.
For me there is no comparison.
LeBron and MJ are completely different players. LeBron looks like Magic, Scottie Pippen, or Dominique Wilkens to me.... but LeBron is better.
MJ is a 2-guard and, he was a killer. The highest scoring avg-per game of any player that's ever played. And he and Scottie were UNDEFEATED in the NBA Finals.
There is an entire era NBA Hall of Famers who never got a ring, because of Michael and Scottie - Charles Barkley, Patrick Ewing, Karl Malone, Reggie Miller... and many others.
THe league was different. The rules were different. The eras were different.
LeBron James is the greatest player of this era. What he's been able to do throughout his career is incredible.

Yes. I have. I watch way too many of them.
I promise you, it’s way worse than you think. When we watch highlights of the best plays or most physical plays from that era it seems so much tougher. If you watch a full game you’ll be astounded at how many bad defensive plays there are.

quote:Dude that started this thread recalled something terrible LeBron did early in his career: he pretended to shoot a basketball while out at a club. 15+ years ago, and that is still seared in his brand.

I’m admittedly a fan. My parents took us (I was a freshman) to this crammed gym in Canton, OH, to see this kid who was getting a ton of buzz in the HS basketball world, who would soon but had not yet become a household name, dominate this little school that my elementary principal was now leading.
The next year, he played this power house school from our area, who had produced a few successful players (this one had a player who had a pretty good career in the MAC) and had just made it to state the year before. Guys who dominated us at the local rec center since we were in 6th grade. It was like a 30 point game at half.
So it was hard not to be a fan after seeing him play in-person before he was even a household name. Even then, I don’t really remember whatever the OP is talking about, so it’s clear that he’s left as much if not more of a lasting impression on the haters as the fans.
