The Candidates (Skipping over some years because I am only listing players whose freshman years I believe deserve mention):
2011:Johnny O'Bryant, Anthony Hickey
2013: Jarell Martin, Jordan Mickey
2015: Ben Simmons, Antonio Blakeney
2017: Tremont Waters
2018: Naz Reid, Javonte Smart
2019: Trendon Watford
2020: Cam Thomas
Assuming Ben is clear number 1 who else would make up a top 5 for you?
My top 5 would be:
1) Ben Simmons
2) Cam Thomas (I know its early but he is leading the SEC in scoring. Could be 1st team All-SEC)
3) Naz Reid
4) Tremont Waters
5) Trendon Watford

Tremont Waters was the man

Terming hands down. No drama. Played hard. Lived up to expectations. Simmons did now of that.

In terms of production and expectations, I'd put Cam before Ben.

Ben was a first team All-American as a freshman. Also, unlike Cam, Ben was the undisputed best player on the team and all expectations fell squarely on his shoulders. Cam had a lot of expectations too as a 5-Star recruit, but it was nothing like what Ben had to deal with. Also, Cam has veterans and potential NBA guys around him in Trendon, Darius and JaVonte. Ben had Hornsby who was solid and Tim Quarterman but Josh Gray wasnt much and Craig Victor was in his first (and only) full year with the team.

People on this board love to hate on Simmons, but the fact of the matter is he had a great season and led the team in basically every important statistical category.

Not true, he was last in fricks given.

Waters was better than simmons. Ben just had way more potential

1) Tremont - put everything on the court, had game winning shots and blocks, led the team to success
2) Naz Reid - super star talent that actually got the team to the post season
3) Ben Simmons - Great stats but was not motivated while playing at LSU. Team underwhelmed
4) Cam - extreme scoring talent, too early to tell full contribution

Imagine being the best player by a mile on the team and people in the locker room are butt hurt about it and then Johnny Jones is your coach. Your fricks would go away by the end of the season too.

If LSU would have had a postseason last year he would be much higher on the list. He was playing great at the end of the season.

As terrible as this effort is, I know exactly what you’re trying to say and I agree. Well done!

And how far did LSU go in the tournament. Besides Simmons, they had Quarterman, Patterson, Blakeney, and Hornsby who had more heart and drive than anyone.

I would like to see how Cam handles SEC play

Seriously Skylar Mays should be somewhere on the list! He is the epitome of what you want college athletics to be. Best player on the team last year
