LSU’s 2019 true freshmen class ranked best in the country by ESPN

Recruiting is the biggest piece of the puzzle in building a college football dynasty. If you win the recruiting battle, you can get a clear head start over other dominant programs.
Some programs are forced to rely on their true freshmen more than others. Sometimes that pays off, and sometimes it doesn't. Obviously, it takes time for top recruits -- or any recruits, for that matter -- to develop, but every year, there are a handful of rare athletes who make an immediate impact from day one as true freshmen.
PFF has unveiled its wins above average metric (PFF WAA) in recent weeks, and we used it to rank the top 10 true freshman classes from the 2019 college football season.
quote:
#1. LSU
Why they're ranked here: Joe Burrow got all the hype -- and rightfully so -- but the dominance of true freshman cornerback Derek Stingley Jr. was a bit overlooked because of it. Stingley finished the season as the second-most valuable LSU Tiger in the team's title-winning run, and he ended up as the most valuable non-quarterback in the country. LSU, which is often referred to as "DBU," had another impact true freshman cornerback on the field in Cordale Flott, who was also stingy in coverage. On his 153 coverage snaps, Flott allowed just eight of 25 targets to be caught, and he produced five pass breakups.
How their top recruit fared: Five-star running back John Emery Jr. was LSU's top recruit from the 2019 class. With Clyde Edwards-Helaire on the roster, Emery saw just 39 carries, but he was incredibly elusive when he saw the field, producing 0.33 broken tackles per rush attempt. In the receiving game, however, Emery saw nine targets and dropped two of those. Although he needs to improve within the passing game, his elusiveness shined there, too, with three broken tackles on six catches.
More on Stingley:
quote:
Best true freshman: Not only was Stingley the best true freshman on LSU's roster, but he was also the best true freshman in the country. He was the most valuable non-quarterback in WAA not just in the 2019 season but since PFF College's inception in 2014. Stingley forced tight coverage on 75.5% of his targets, which was the second-highest rate in the FBS and more than 25 percentage points higher than the average. On those tight coverage targets, Stingley allowed just 20 catches from 71 total targets while intercepting six passes and forcing 20 incompletions. He's the definition of a lockdown corner.

How can a true freshman be that good? Last year, he was in high school. High school. He went to prom. This year, he was locking down future NFL WRs at the highest levels of college football, including the playoffs. What is he going to do for two more years? Get bigger and stronger I suppose, which should be a frightening thought for our opponents.

But, Bo Nix.
What a travesty.

When they said during bowl practices last year that Stingley could start at CB for LSU in the bowl game, I thought that was just coaches talking up a recruit. They weren't BSing anybody though.

As a freshman, he led the Southeastern Conference (SEC) with six interceptions and 15 passes defended and was a first-team All-SEC selection by the Associated Press (AP). He was also a consensus All-American, earning first-team honors from the AP, American Football Coaches Association, The Sporting News, Sports Illustrated, ESPN, and USA Today.

And also when watching the SEC Inside Championship, on Stingley’s fumble recovery at the end of game instead of running with ball which he could have, he secured with both hands and fell to the ground, most of not all players would have tried to get a few yards, yet HE knew the time on clock, the importance of maintaining possession, and thought of fumbling back to Clemson (disaster) All this from a freshman playing on the biggest stage in all of college football, pardon me I’m blushing, but no kidding this man is the DUDE

I'm a little surprised Stingley is getting these extreme reviews given his performance in the Bama game. He will definitely have that matchup circled against Devonta Smith next year though.

Looks like you're not all that speedy...

One TD was that ridiculous look off by Tua and quick snap, while Stingley was looking at Coaches shouting something at him, that’s was the most upset I saw him all season, he said after the TD , just let me play I got this! PG version obviously

He also has a great work ethic. Expect him to fix what few weaknesses he has.

Go back to the Clemson game, there was a play right before half where they are trying to throw it downfield to their best wideout and stingly is running stride for stride with him all the way and forces the WR out of bounds and gave no chance for him to catch the ball, in the replay, you can see where stingly is smiling as soon as he see's the ball is going to be uncatchable. He's out there laughing at these 1st rounders.

Flott was a big miss by recruiting services, he was ranked like the 50th or so best corner
You can't find 50 freshman corners form last year with a better season than him considering the competition
He and stingley side by side will be elite when they're JRs

And Arik is basically the offensive version of Stingley, theyre the highest rated prospects at their position ever

You can’t really begin to fully assess a recruiting class until year 3 on campus. Lots of guys will contribute in year 2 and 3 that didn’t in year 1 because of NFL players ahead of them on the depth chart or injuries etc.
If you’re talking about one guy, Stingley is the best frosh defender I can remember, though.

The last Bama TD wasn’t a fluke though, he just got beat and that’s totally ok. Playing CB at this level today has to be the most difficult position in football.

He was beat by a player that would be in the conversation for top 20 pick in the NFL THIS YEAR too. It wasn’t some scrub.

Stingley got cooked against Devonta repeatedly. It wasn’t just that one play.

The bama game was game for crying out loud. The props is for his body of work for the whole season, the kid is a stud.
