Defensive Discipline

The intricate scheme run by House requires discipline. We have low experience at the LB and CB positions. Thus the coverage busts. Also coaching issues on DLine. Cant keep balanced pocket pressure. Growing pains.

I think maybe these players do not have the aptitude to play it.

We run similarly complex NFL like scheme to Bama’s and Georgia’s. Just gonna have to keep coming together and working to comprehend this scheme!

This was a glaring issue vs Arkansas. On my rewatch we had several easy sacks disrupted by our own players getting out of position and running into each other. Twice on huge 3rd down conversions. One was the long TD.
On one play Swinson got so far out of position that he actually blocked Harold perkins and prevented him from getting to KJ. KJ was able to scramble and get a first down. On the long TD to the TE Womack and Wingo collided probably 3 feet from KJ allowing him to just step up and make the throw.
This is what Kelly was talking about when he said to do the ordinary things extraordinary. Do your job. Those were perfectly called plays by House, and should have both been sacks, but guys trying to play hero ball led to them converting and eventually getting points.

How about the play where Jefferson got outside the pocket, and Alexander is looking in the backfield instead of running with his guy. Easy TD.

Maybe some and those will get weeded out but mostly its mental and these are kids...talent is there.

The good thing is the DL mistakes getting out of rush lanes is easily coachable. The play by Zy when he voided the Tight End to come up to stop KJ that is also coachable and easy fixes. Doing your job are easy fixes. The easy completions against Cover 3 is play calling not necessarily our players fault.
House is scared to play man with the guys we have but playing Cover 3 is too easy to pick apart. Will be curious to see if goes to a Cover 2, Cover 4 or if he tries more man. Does Toviano get more playing time to help with man coverage or does Welch get a try at Corner to see what he lookslike in Man coverage. This weeks game will say a lot about our team.

Most of our starters in these positions are fresh. Getting Speights back will help.

That’s the play where Womack and Wingo collided right next to KJ. KJ should’ve never been able to escape the pocket. Not sure why Zy left his man which is another issue, but that started with poor discipline up front.

This was a frustrating play. 18 blew his guy off the ball and had him backpedaling almost immediately. Perk— on the twist— looked to have contain, but Swinson kept pushing up field to the point that he was in contain position and screened Perkins right out of the play. If memory serves, I’m pretty sure Smith was out of position there, too and it gave Jefferson a huge lane to escape and pick up the 1st. Perfect illustration of what Kelly was talking about relative to guys not playing assignment football. I’ve heard so many people shitting on the DBs and saying the front 7 has been good enough, but the fact is the front left huge lanes for the QB to escape multiple times in the game, and was just as big of an issue as some of the DB breakdowns.

Didn't we have this issue a couple of years ago in the first couple of games, and coaching staff finally realized they were giving the players too much information and making them hesitant instead of letting them play at full speed?

I get what you mean, but most of them also have enough experience to understand fundamental responsibilities

We'll see what happens.
