LSU Fall Camp Evaluations: The Offensive Line
The Tigers continue seeing growth from five-star Zalance Heard, depth shining as of late.
* ZACK NAGY17 MINUTES AGO
In this story:
LSU TIGERS
Brian Kelly and Co. flaunt an embarrassment of riches in their offensive line room with several returning pieces from a season ago.
Along with returning the entire starting unit from a season ago, the Tigers went out and added a myriad of newcomers during the offseason to provide depth moving forward.
From five-star tackle Zalance Heard to Maryland transfer Mason Lunsford, LSU reeled in key pieces in order to have stability up front.
How did this group perform during Fall Camp? Which newcomers are flying up the depth chart? What do rotations look like?
The Offensive Line Evaluations
First-Team: Will Campbell (LT), Garrett Dellinger (LG), Charles Turner (C), Miles Frazier (RG), Emery Jones (RT)
Will Campbell
Campbell has taken on more of a leadership role as he enters his sophomore season with high expectations. After putting his name on the map after an impressive freshman campaign, Campbell has the chance to put together an All-Conference year for the Tigers.
During Fall Camp, it was the same story for the second-year star. He didn’t lose many one-on-one’s and shined against the likes of Sai’vion Jones and other pass rushers.
Looking ahead to the 2023 season, there’s significant weight on Campbell’s shoulders for a big-time year.
Garrett Dellinger
Dellinger quietly had an impressive offseason after missing some time during the 2022 year. He put on more size and has looked impressive when healthy. After starting last season at center before eventually moving to guard, his game improved at a rapid pace.
Now playing guard in a full-time capacity, it’s helped him get in a groove during Fall Camp. Look for Dellinger to remain consistent this season for the left side of the offensive line alongside Campbell.
Charles Turner
This is where it gets interesting. Turner returned to Baton Rouge with the chance to polish his game with an LSU offensive line that brought back several key pieces. For the senior, he’s been battling with Marlon Martinez for starting center duties.
During the Fall Camp scrimmage, Turner handled starting reps with all signs pointing towards him winning the job, but the next week and a half will be key.
Turner looked the part during in one-on-one’s and has the chance to be a consistent piece to the Tigers offensive line in 2023.
Miles Frazier
Frazier’s role this season will linger on his consistency. We saw Brian Kelly shakeup the offensive line during Saturday’s scrimmage with Emery Jones sliding to right guard, taking Frazier’s spot, and freshman Zalance Heard taking first-team reps at right tackle.
For Frazier, he took on an expanded role last season for LSU and has the chance to carry that success into 2023, but he’ll have youngsters on his tail looking to take his spot.
During camp, Frazier had impressive flashes, but continuing to put it all together will be key.
Emery Jones
Jones shined as a freshman last season for the Tigers. It was an impressive first season in Baton Rouge for the youngster where he stole the show with fellow first-year Tiger Will Campbell. Looking ahead, Jones’ role will expand.
Will he start at right guard or right tackle? He’s shown versatility during camp where he’s played both roles and the improvement of Zalance Heard will ultimately tell the story with which position Jones plays.
All in all, it was a beneficial camp for Jones who showcased his versatility up front.
Second-Team: Bo Bordelon (LT), Kimo Makane'ole (LG), DJ Chester (C), Marlon Martinez (G,C), Zalance Heard (RT), Mason Lunsford (G)

I’m ready to see the line go to work. Last year was good, I think we start bullying teams this year. That’s a line that averages 6’5 320-330 across the board

Iron sharpens Iron.
Be on your best game or the guy behind you will take your spot.
BK wants elite o-line play.

Emery Jones Jr. 6-6 315 Sophomore
Lance Heard 6-6 340 Freshman
Will Campbell 6-6 325 Sophomore
Charles Turner III 6-4 300 5th-year Senior
Miles Frazier 6-6 335 Redshirt Junior
Garrett Dellinger 6-5 325 Junior
Marlon Martinez 6-5 330 Senior

Don’t forget Bo Bordelon. He’s a lot bigger than I thought he was

Most people underestimate the huge importance of an elite O-line. Even many coaches focus more on recruiting talented ball handlers. But those guys can’t achieve their best if the front line is regularly breaking down and disrupting plays.
If it’s true LSU’s O-line is at elite lever this year, then I’m very excited to see our offense when we put up gobs of points on the scoreboard each week.

Nasty OL. This is why we are close maybe for 3 quarters. Our OL and DL will take over along with the great conditioning for late in the 4th quarter. LSU rolls over FSU. Deeper in the skilled areas than FSU.
LSU 41
FSU 23

All of this sounds like a very biased unrealistic opinion lol
FSU might have the best DL we see all year. At least we already saw them last year & have a year of experience under our belt now.
“Deeper in the skilled areas”

Our depth at DB is the weakness of our defense & FSU has some very talented receivers. It will be a battle, but I think our DL will put the pressure on their QB

And they will be even better next year. All the projected starters return except for Turner.

And this is why you hire BK, amongst many other reasons.

Freshman Phenom 7.0: LSU OL Zalance Heard Up Next For The Tigers
Heard has worked his way into first-team reps, looking to continue positive trajectory.
* ZACK NAGY3 HOURS AGO
In this story:
LSU TIGERS
LSU offensive lineman Zalance Heard has the chance to make an immediate impact in his first season with the Tigers.
The five-star prospect out of Monroe (La.) gave this program a boost when he revealed his pledge to Brian Kelly’s program last year, and after making his way to campus over the summer, he turned heads instantly.
The 6-foot-6, 340-pounder is a menace up front and has already seen first-team reps at right tackle during preseason practice.
What’s in store for Heard during his first season in Baton Rouge? What makes him so special?
A dive into Heard’s game:
Physical Tools
The true freshman’s size and strength jumps off of the screen when watching film. Already at 6-foot-6, 340 pounds, Heard looks the part of an SEC offensive lineman and has only been in Baton Rouge for a few months.
A player that could have enrolled early in January, Heard arrived on campus over the summer physically impressive and has only utilized the strength and conditioning program to his advantage.
The air is different in northern Louisiana and it shows in both Heard and LSU offensive lineman Will Campbell.
Both teammates at Neville High School, they took their talents to LSU with impressive tools to work with. Campbell took the country by storm as a true freshman and Heard has the chance to do the same.
Immediate Impact Talent, Polished Game
Brian Kelly started two true freshman a season ago when he gave Campbell and Emery Jones the nod with the offensive line unit. It was an uncharacteristic move for Kelly who traditionally doesn’t give his youngsters such large roles in year one, but the “gamble” paid off for the Tigers.
Fast forward to Kelly’s second season in Death Valley and we could see him start a freshman once again.
As it stands the first-team offensive line in camp has been: Will Campbell (LT), Garrett Dellinger (LG), Charles Turner (C), Miles Frazier (RG), Emery Jones (RT), but the rotations could change sooner rather than later.
Heard worked in with the first-team on Saturday during the Fall Camp scrimmage. When inserted into a starting role, Miles Frazier was bumped out of the group and Emery Jones slid to right guard. Heard worked at right tackle.
Kelly has praised his youngster and the strides he’s taken over the last few weeks.
Brian Kelly’s Praise
When a five-star prospect of Heard’s caliber arrives on campus, it’s interesting to monitor their progression and Kelly has been pleased with where the Louisiana native stands.
LEARNING WITH HIS FRIENDS
HE’S HAVING FUN
The God-given talent he has is clear with the sheer size and strength he attains, but from a technique perspective, Heard is polishing his game.
“He certainly has developed an understanding of the offense and technique. It’s college football, there were guys last year where it was a mismatch most of the time. Now, he’s going against Sai'vion Jones and college football players and that’s a whole different thing for him to deal with and the rigors of that,” Kelly said on Tuesday. “Is he pushing for a starting position? He’s a guy that we’re giving reps to. We have to find the best five guys, then the next is the sixth and seventh and he’s in the mix. He’s out there competing hard.”
Now, the true freshman has the chance to step in and take significant snaps in his first season with the Tigers.
A player who arrived in Baton Rouge with high expectations, Heard is living up to the hype through his first offseason.

Aren’t they down their best guy and then another expected starter due to transfer rules?
