Skenes Fastball Data

Anybody have the trackman data on skenes pitches this year? Been reading over some scouts opinions on him saying his fastball is too flat. Needs “more” movement which is crazy.

Go watch every homer he gave up all year and see what pitch he threw. Slider and change are filthy. Fastball can use more arm side run. A little upward action through the zone would make him unhitable.
It’s hard to go 2-3 times through an MLB lineup. They will get him fine tuned in Pittsburgh.

Imagine his slider and change with Floyd's fastball.

heres an idea. Granted it's one pitch and not the averages of the guys below
Verlander 94.1 mph
12.5" vertical drop
8.1" horizontal
spin: 2425 rpm
Ohtani 97.0 MPH avg
14.9" vertical
4.0" horizontal
spin: 2268 rpm
Gerritt Cole 96.9 mph
11.8" vertical
8.8" horizontal
spin: 2432 rpm

What was Floyd’s spin rate? Wasn’t it even higher?

Thanks man. That’s good data. Yep, his vertical break has been in question but knew it wasn’t bad, once he’s fine tuned at the major league level he’ll be a consistent winner.

On his fastball, about the same
He gets some major vertical movement though on some of his pitches
>
Now Hurd's curveball broke 3000 rpms in the CWS a few times.

The draft nerds say the shape is not great. They say it's similar to Hunter Greene in the pros, who's a good young pitcher lol. I'm sure they can reshape it though if it's really as bad as they say it is so idk what they're worried about. I mean the pitch is disgusting so I don't see the problem

Skenes doesn’t have good extension
If you want to nitpick, that’s something critics will point out as well
His FB shape is also why we saw a lot of 2 seamers from him down the stretch.
Just threw it up in the zone
Here’s everything you want to know about Skenes’ pitch shape data
LINK
Quick hits on that if you don’t want to watch
Skenes’ extension would rank 3rd percentile among MLB pitchers
FB velocity of 97.2
Vertical break of 15.7”
Horizontal 16” to the arm side (2 seam run)

Fastballs don’t move upward.

Certainly 16” of horizontal break isn’t accurate?

No but more spin is less downward movement which creates a “rise” in a fastball vs a lesser spin one

Don't tell Ty Floyd lol.
Skenes has tons of lateral movement on his FB. I read that comment on ESPN and the first thought in my mind was, have you ever even seen him pitch? That take is incomprehensible to me.

Doesn't Floyd throw primarily 4 seam fbs which would have less horizontal and vertical break?
I am guessing Skenes throws 2 seam fbs thus the horizontal break is so great. I wonder if he throws a 4 seam...seems like it would be as effective as Floyds high 4 seam fbs

Does not equal upward. You are looking for “stays on plane” more than others.

Dude Skenes has all the makings of Nolan Ryan with better control..... Need I say more?

Skenes throws both two and four seam fb’s. Ever watch a game he was pitching with Big Ben calling the game? He’s broken it down a good bit and said the vertical is fine for the big league and also doesn’t matter as much because Skenes is SO ACCURATE with both two and four seam
Posted on 7/12/23 at 8:41 am to ThadCastle2010
Ryan Theriot said you can throw 120. If it doesn't have movement the MLB will hit it. In the college game, he got away with it more.

I don't doubt he throws both but the 2 pitches should have separate data...a 4 seam fb isn't going to have much horizontal break.

One of the main reasons why announcers (Big Ben mainly) said he could probably jump straight into the major as a bullpen arm this season, but not as a starter.
