Hawthorne was awesome before he became an angry old man

Goosebumps every time.
The best moment in LSU sports history. I was 5 years old and will always remember the reaction. LSU baseball was life for 90s kids.

When i saw it hit i thought that's a double tie game! then it kept carrying so Hawthorne's call was perfect

I have a friend who thinks this is the funniest line in all of sports history. Anytime anyone brings up Hawthorne or the Morris HR that is the first thing he blurts out

Hawthorne was a goober who often time left you confused as to what was actually happening on the field. But you could NEVER question his passion.
Blair is starting to come around a bit on that (see the call of the 2 point conversion vs. Alabama). But Hawthorne is the soundtrack for most of the big moments in LSU histroy.

His 2000 championship call is awesome as well

I had the fortune of being there. Sat down the third base line.
Before the game started and before people were let in, I convinced the stadium personnel to allow me access to a pay phone inside. As I spoke to my father back home in BR, the Miami team had entered and were passing by me on the phone. I will never forget the cold looks I got wearing my purple and gold.

If Tony Romo was calling that game, he would have talked all the way through all of it, then explained why he knew it would happen until the broadcast ended or the crowd vacated the stadium, whatever came first.
One of the worst trends in broadcasting is the nonstop chatter. Notice that after Hawthorne rightfully goes apeshit, both he and William Franques let it breathe so you can hear the earth-rattling crowd reaction. It's well done.

i couldn't disagree more. Football he gave out the formations, direction, called motions etc. Basketball he was great. Baseball the same his biggest problem, to his haters, was he got overly excited at times thinking balls were going out. If you are ever at a game though plenty of people rise from their seat when balls are hit thinking they are going out only to be a routine fly ball.
Blair waits to make the call. At least did for a while. You would hear the ball hit and fans groan before he would say that's a 5-4-3 dp

Yep, Hawthorne wasn’t perfect but he handled that perfectly. Probably because he needed the time to regain his composure

Only thing better would have been if he said Jack Hunt hit the home run.

I also love the ump giving Morris a little shove to make sure he touches the plate.

Hawthorne was just fine and I miss his calls. I also think Blair does a very good job.

I always thought it was the foreshadowing just before the pitch. After he gave Morris' game stats and everything, he says, paraphrasing, "well, it's going to take a base hit, error, pass ball, or something.........."whack", that's way back there, way back there,,,HOMERUN, HOMERUN!
I think I find that part so underrated because NO ONE was thinking homerun. I know I wasn't. It was just "get the runner home". That "or something" ended up being the most celebrated moment in LSU history. Or something...awesome.

Hawthorne got the player right, he certainly carried the excitement to the fans at home, but he called it a three run homer. 2/3 ain’t bad.

Well said. I can still recite his entire call by memory. Indelibly etched in my brain.

Trivia time.
Who scored the tying run from third in that game?

That will NEVER get old. I had that recorded on VHS, played it again and again for years. I was 14 when he hit it and baseball was life.

Brad Wilson??

Brad Wilson. Had a leadoff double to start the inning. And it was a close play at 2nd.
