Kim Mulkey story

I knew Kim’s dad, Les. I am from Independence. We played against each other in competitive softball. Hammond and Independence were both members of Dixie Youth Baseball. I coached and helped with the Independence league. When Kim was 12 she played shortstop for one of the two Hammond Dixie All star teams. The District tournament was in independence that year. When the Hammond allstars took the field for their first game the District Director , Mr. Berthelot, ran on the field halted the game and took Kim off the field. Girls could not play he said. Rules you know. Well Les had a lawyer ready, my good friend Ron Macsluso from Hammond. Ron was a year or two out of law school but he got an injunction to halt play and then prevailed in the hearing and Kim was allowed to play. I wonder today if Kim remembers any of that.

She told me that she does.

I hope this question is rhetorical. You can damn well bet she remembers all that.
I can understand where the director was coming from, though. An injury to a girl in a boys’ league could be a big liability.

Kim actually just talked about this specific thing in one of her Final 4 press conferences. Her not being allowed to play as a girl apparently stuck in her mind all these years.

I agreed then. Not sure now. The problem was she was the best player in the tournament. LOL.

You talking about my little floor general?

I was an eye witness to it all. She also hung around the men’s softball tournaments on the weekend. I actually saw her play second base in a softball game against grown men. At the age of 12. That was dangerous. It did not happen often but she did do it.

What about black kids? Were they allowed to play? I’m always interested in the timing regarding DYB and that issue.

Sadly, no. Hammond broke that barrier down a year or so later.

Same where I played. Happy to report though that I’ve been able to coach several young black children in DYB over the years.

I actually heard about this (for the first time) over the weekend while at a party. I was talking to someone who was related to the judge that ruled in Kim‘s favor.

I assume the grown men survived.

Back when she was hired, I read a story about her playing on the baseball team and how it wasn't typically allowed.
Still a great story that should be told and retold..

Hey man . Just sharing an interesting story from deep in the past don’t need your sarcasm.

So we are all good with girls playing in boys sports leagues now?
Sounds terrible to me.
