To the haters who said “why are we spending $2M/year to coach program that loses $4M/year”

I think it’s now safe to say it was well worth it for the hundreds of LSU fans who are still on cloud 9 today after the championship last night.

I watched the first women’s basketball game ever yesterday. I’m not really a women’s basketball fan. That said whatever they payed was well worth it.

It can’t be measured just by the bottom line. Hiring Kim Mulkey was a good deal. We just knew she would win multiple championships. The prestige is worth something, and that doesn’t show up on an income statement or a balance sheet.

Yup, LSU and the athletic department have gotten millions of free marketing the last couple weeks.
Some firm will put a number to it I’m sure, but it’s definitely in the millions.

The firms began their studies of the WBB final 4 of 2021 and showed due to tv structuring and bundling deals for ladies athletics vs. Compartmentalized for men's $100m disparity could be made up with restructuring in 2025. All this obviously is still speculative however it is documented:
espn - article on law firms financial analysis
response to media inquiries during the basketball tournaments in March, the NCAA said the women’s tournament lost $2.8 million in 2019, “the largest loss of any NCAA championship.”
Yet detailed estimates included in an addendum to the Kaplan report, prepared by a sports media rights consultant who worked for more than two decades as an NBA executive, paint a sharply different picture.
The women’s basketball tournament could be worth $100 million a year in media-rights fees alone starting in 2025 after its current deal ends. That’s according to an analysis led by Ed Desser, president of a California-based sports media rights consultancy.
