Butler and Central Connecticut - Crowdsourced Weekend Preview
Posted on 2/28/23 at 4:58 pm
Posted on 2/28/23 at 4:58 pm
Another multi-opponent weekend on deck for the Tigers. Jay likes to set this format up to simulate regional weekend. This year the blood-donors are Butler and Central Connecticut.
Friday 6:30pm central
LSU - Paul Skenes
Butler - LHP Cole Graverson
Saturday 1:30pm central
LSU - TBD
Central Connecticut - TBD
Sunday 1:00pm central
LSU - TBD
Central Connecticut - TBD
Monday 6:30pm central
LSU - TBD
Butler - TBD
Butler brings in 31-year-old first year head coach and couple of locals. Central Connecticut comes in with zero games played on the season.
Butler has started the year 2-5, splitting their first four games with Fairleigh Dickinson and then dropping the next three to perennial regional program Campbell. In each of their losses they’ve given up at least 9 runs. The two locals I mentioned are Scott Jones and Austin Andrishok, both from LSUE. Andrishok is from Catholic High in Baton Rouge while Jones is from Sulphur. Andrishok, an LHP, hasn’t seen any time on the mound this season. Jones starts in the outfield. Buter’s starting shortstop will sound familiar. His name is Carter Dorighi, his brother Brennan hit a homer for Iowa against LSU this past weekend. I think this is the first time LSU will face two brothers on different teams since we played Matt and Mark Vierling on Notre Dame and Mizzou respectively in 2018.
Butler will face Central Connecticut on Friday afternoon before playing LSU that night. Butler will play Indiana tonight, which will create RPI connectivity for us as Indiana also played Texas and Auburn so far this year. I will have more information on their starting pitcher later in the week. In lieu of that, enjoy this box score from when LSU was horribly under-seeded in the NCAA tournament and faced off against the team-before-the-team in 2009: Butler vs LSU
Central Connecticut was picked to win the Northeast Conference and return to NCAA postseason play, where LSU met them in 2021. Looks like there are only 2 guys from that box score still on the team, OF Hunter Pasqualini and pitcher Jake Neuman. Pasqualini was all conference last season. The Blue Devils also have LHP Anthony Mozzicato. He’s one of their best pitchers but he's also notable in that his brother Frank Mozzicato was drafted by the Royals in the first round in 2021 and took a big enough discount on his signing bonus that the Royals were able to draft and sign LSU signees Ben Kudrna and Carter Jensen.
Again, since they haven’t played any games yet and will not play LSU first, I have no idea who their starting pitcher will be. Mozzicato or 2022 NEC Rookie of the Year Vincent Spizzoucco (another LHP) seem like the likely candidates. In fact, I’d like to see LSU face them both. I believe Central Connecticut has players that aren't Italian on their team, but I've not been able to confirm that at this point.
This beer of the series comes from Indianapolis (because I’ve never been to Connecticut). It’s the Wee Mac Scotch Ale. While I haven’t had this particular one in several years, Scotch Ales are a favorite of mine and this one helped start me off on that course. It’s only 5.3 ABV, so on the low end for the style. They also make a version with coffee in it, which pretty great in its own right, but more limited in availability.

Thank you for putting these together!
I wanted to say that in order to encourage you to continue with them. I'm sure many appreciate them, but just don't take the time to tell you that, leaving you to believe that they aren't all that important.
You contribute a lot to this board, and I for one, appreciate it!

lol I've been around for a while. I don't post very often though.
Usually I will try to post sports medicine info in order to help clarify the things on this board. I know that I appreciate it when others who are experts in certain arenas, post things in order to enlighten the rest. I would be disingenuous to not at least share something when it could be my turn to contribute.

Butler lost to Indiana 13-2 last night. They're giving up a ton of runs each game. We really should knock the cover off the ball against them.

THREAD HIJACKING!!!!
If you enjoy Scotch Ales, These are my favorites ...
Old Chub is probably my go-to of the three. Just a very good casual /daily beer. Discovered Innis & Gunn when in Scotland. Barrel Aged, so a little more ABV
Founders makes a Barrel Aged version of Dirty Bastard called Backwoods Bastard.

Old Chub and Dirty Bastard are a couple of my favorites. I haven’t had the other one. I believe the story goes that Founders was on their last legs and close to being shut down by creditors when they put our Dirty Bastard and it was popular enough to essentially save their company. This was obviously very early in their history but it was also at a time when no one was making Scotch Ales and people weren’t drinking a lot of strong beer.

After a little more research on Central Connecticut, 4 of their top starter candidates are lefties. Niman, Neuman, Mozzicato, and Spizzuocco. So it looks like we stand a very good chance to face a couple of them this weekend. Neuman has been mostly a reliever in his career, but he did start 5 games last season. He finished out the game against LSU in the Oregon regional a couple years ago.
Niman led them in innings last year, Spizzuocco was their best K/9 guy. I can see why they're picked to win their conference with pretty much their whole rotation back.
Similar to Sam Houston, these will be games we should roll, but will look better on the resume than it seems right now. Despite not having played any games yet, they're the better opponent of the two we will face.

I think Butler and CC play on Saturday as well, but I'm not sure.

Butler has posted their series preview: LINK
They will throw a lefty against us on Friday.
They also listed Central Connecticut's starters against them, Niman and Nueman. That should mean we're going to get Mozzocato and Spizzuocco.
That means at least for Friday, Saturday, and Sunday we will face lefty starters. The ones from CCSU are a step up from Butler. I don't know how they compare with ones we've faced so far this season though.

CCSU picked to win their conference. Maybe we’ll see them in our regional again. I remember that dogfight from a couple years ago.

Should be a beautiful weekend for baseball.
I don't expect Central Connecticut to hit much. I think they'll be sharp on the mound and defensively, but not have too much rhythm offensively against our arms. No real info to support that other than they haven't played any yet, and our arms are well greased already.
