No LSU lost 24-10 because Etling couldn't hit the broad side of a barn
Canada drew up the best offensive gameplan against Alabama in years and LSU ran for 151 yards and outgained Alabama. Receivers were wide open all night.

Chark had bama corner beat twice for the homerun ball but Etling under threw him both times but Russell Gage hurt a bama player with his dick jumping over him lol.

those rainbow overthrows to wide open receivers with no safeties playing behind were heartbreaking.

The thing that killed me with Etling was not having the self awareness of where the 1st down marker was. I remember the 2017 Miss St game it was 4th and 12. Instead of trying to make a play he ran for 3 yards and ran out of bounds. A lot of times it could be 3rd and 10 or 3rd and 17, he would throw a 5 yard pass or something. He would always be short trying to get the 1st down lol.

I blame the coaching staff more than Etling. A Danny Etling should never be a starting QB at LSU in the first place.

Don't care what anyone says, but Danny Etling was a decent QB that put in more effort (on the field at least) than any QB that I've seen at LSU for at least a decade before he played.

It would be hard to find a person to argue against that. He just had a lower ceiling, but he probably busted his arse to reach it.

Was that the one where Canada wanted to play Brennan but allegedly O wouldn't let him until the game was over? I remember they butted heads over personnel at some point in the season but can't recall the specifics.

Etling gave LSU everything he had and a lot of respect for him but he is what I want my backup quarterback to be. I definitely pick him over Brandon Harris. Brandon Harris was the one I thought was going to change the quarterback position at LSU because of his arm but he never looked comfortable and always threw the ball 20 yards over the receiver’s head.

the matt canada time is still a bit before my hardcore fandom started. was he actually decent but O was just an idiot?

2017 was an interesting year
In game 3 LSU got demolished by Mississippi St. and Orgeron essentially blamed Canada's offense for the defeat. If I recall correctly, LSU hit on a long TD pass on the first drive that would have put them up 7-0. However, it was called back on a BS OPI flag. LSU never recovered. O quietly was pissed with Canada's offense only putting up 7 points even though the LSU defense was terrible all game long (some of it had to do with the LSU DL only having like two available guys in that game)
By the time LSU got to the Troy game Orgeron was done with Canada and demanded he change the offense. The proof for that is the first half of the Troy game looked nothing like the offense Canada had run in the first 4 games of the season. As we know, LSU went into HT trailing 17-0. The offense reverted back to more of Canada's offense in the second half, but it wasn't enough to overcome the 17-0 hole (Etling wasn't good and he was replaced by Brennan for part of the game).
After that, Ed allowed Canada to run his offense the rest of the way beginning with the next game at Florida which resulted in a win. LSU then came back to upset No. 10 Auburn the next week. The game at Alabama was probably the best LSU's offense had looked against Bama in at least 3 years (maybe more). Canada's scheme busted some long runs and wide open receivers. Unfortunately, Etling's limitations prevented LSU from capitalizing. LSU then rolled the rest of the way. But, by that time, Ed had already long decided he wanted Canada gone.
Was Canada the greatest OC LSU ever had? No. But I don't think his offense was a bad as people on here made it out to be. In 2018 Ed "shrewdly" decided to return to Ensminger at OC which led to LSU extending their scoreless streak vs Bama under Ensminger to 8 quarters.
That 2017 Troy game was just the first example of what happens when Orgeron was allowed to have input on the on-field approach/scheme. LSU's most embarrassing loss in over 15 years. History would repeat itself when Orgeron would bless the football world in 2020 with his "tremendous" defensive approach that dumped LSU to the bottom of the nation. It continued through 2021 until the Alabama game when, after abandoning O's approach, LSU suddenly looked like a great defense again.
Moral of the story, Orgeron is a disaster if you allow him to do anything more than recruit. The guy had the easiest college football job in the world. Be grossly overpaid to recruit at a high level and get out of the way to let smarter football minds control the actual game. He couldn't even do that!!!

Etling's deep ball was pretty good all year.
So fricking typical it was garbage against bama

He did in 2019...right? And probably most of 2018?
