Who thinks 14 is the new magic number for all conferences??

Lots of talk of 14 lately. Seems to work better for everyone involved.
ACC is already at 14 but also looking at UConn. I think they are preparing themselves for the fact that the SEC's #14 comes from their conference.
Thoughts?

uconn is begging the acc, not the other way around.
i dont think anyone goes to 16 yet so 14 and under it is. the pac sealed that earlier this week.
that said, if nd wanted in the acc they would take them in a heartbeat and expand to 16.
i think the sec is done with trying to canabalize from other big power player conferences.

While 14 works better than 13, it is more like a stable resting point than a magic number. This thing was always dependent on the ability of the Big 12 and BE to survive. If they do we stop for a while. If they don't we keep on consolidating.

16 should be reserved for the WAC's of the world...if you go beyond 14, you will cause some teams to not play each other very often. Part of the fun of being in the SEC is the chance to play at all these awesome stadiums.

i agree that 16 is too much. Four 16 team conferences still leave out some good programs from the mix.
we need to keep the current make up.
that said, if you are the acc and have 14 teams and nd applies you jump on it. that would bring a crazy amount of tv revenue to your conference and would more than make up for the conference being "too big"

Doesn't work out as well as 16, but that seems to be where we are going now. Eventually, the super conferences will expand to 16.

If you go beyond 14, they will break up into multiple div (3 at 15, 4 at 16). A 16 team 4 div w/o a perm opp and a 9 game conf sched can play every one on a home and home in 4 years (we're currently at 5). You can also arrange teams so that all but one of the key historical rivalries (TN/AL, GA/AU, AL/AU, OM/MSU) are preserved. LSU/AL would also be lost, but when you're third at best on AL's pecking order...

5 14 team conferences.
5 conference champions + 3 at large bids (top ranked non champions from any div I schools.)
playoff with 8 teams. use 4 bcs bowls + cotton + chik-fila for 6 games besides championship, rotate in for the championship game.

When AU made the offer to move east, one of these were going away. And if you go to 16 with only one going away...

Vandy should just drop football or go 1-AA. ;)
That would make us the 12th team.

you will never have a system where a fanbase will have to travel to 3 "bowl" playoff games. 4 if you count the CCG. so unless the games are held on home turf, you can forget about an 8 team playoff.
those home turf games are apparently not as profitable as neutral site bowl games, so they arent going to take them away.
result, no 8 team playoff in any shape form or fashion.
maybe that got through to you?

14>16
Cringe at the thought of a conf that size. I'll smack the next person that mentions "pods" too!

I actually like it at 12 teams; however, I would not be opposed to 14...just for the love of everything, I hope it does not go to 16.

While 12>16, 16 with pods is > 14.
