I think they need BYU. SMU does nothing for the big 12

I'd like to see Houston, and why not Boise St?

There were multiple reports after TCU got it's invite that negotiations with BYU fell apart. I'm pretty sure BYU would have been first on the invite list, not second.

If BYU says no, as much as it hurts, I have to say Boise. Ugh!

Boise has to be a last resort for the Big 12. They have a fine football team, and nothing else.

I would laughed if Boise get into the Big 12 and dominate.

Then you'd be wrong. Neinas stated that the TV partners would only allow the contract to stay at it's current value for 10 teams if TCU was #10, as they consider TCU an ample replacement for Texas A&M... i.e. the draw for ad revenue is approximately the same, as calculated by viewership that TCU games have garnered in the past several years. That being the case, one must question not only what TCU is doing right, but also what A&M has been doing that is so wrong. There's no way a non-BCS team from a private school of 7K students should match a 50K enrollment BCS school that is a flagship of the second most populous state in the country, and that being a state that is bonkers for football. And with all of that plus no bowl wins in a decade, the SEC was tripping all over itself to get them. Im glad they were because it opened up a seat at the table for TCU, but A&M is not set up for success in the SEC.

San Diego State is actually closer to Austin than BYU

The AD from SDSU tweeted that fact earlier. Austin is also the furtherest south of any state capitol in the lower 48.

Not that it would happen, but half the conference being in Texas would give you a Red River rematch championship game most years, something a little more compelling nationally than Texas or OU against K-State or Louisville.

BYU would be my next call over Louisville. Decent football and basketball programs, solid academics, solid facilities, Salt Lake market, plus a national appeal due to the Mormon aspect. Dollar wise, BYU is worth more than UL hands down. Kentucky is a UK state and UL will not bring much of a market.

Every remaining option has flaws.

Boise--too far away, nothing to offer except football

Houston/SMU--adding another Texas team means another hog at the trough without making the trough bigger

UL/Cincy/WV--geographical outliers to the east, sucky academics, mediocre football

Tulane--terrible football and MBB programs

Memphis--terrible football, MBB can't win without cheating

If they do take anyone else, they have to decide which factors matter and which ones don't.

I know they've been down for a little while and have never been a national name, but what about Colorado State just to get the market back. I would imagine they would mean more money than Louisville or West Virginia.

Even though it probably won't happen, I would like to see SMU get back into a big time conference. I'd like to see the ponies relevant again.

Yeah... putting SMU in the Big XII now would pretty much bring back the old Southwest Conference... sans Arkansas but with 2 schools from Oklahoma. (also minus aTm as they are now in the SEC)

and it was SMU's death penalty that was the first domino in the SWC's demise

But we keep hearing this is all about football.

The persistent rumor is that the Big 12 will stand pat at 10 so each team gets more TV money but I think adding BYU and Boise to get to 12 makes a ton of sense.

Deloss Dodds wants a 10 team Big 12, so that's where they remain. Everything I have read says that they will replace Mizzou with Louisville if Mizzou can get their SEC invite. I don't see Louisville as a good add, but it's the name that I keep seeing.

BYU has already turned them down. That's why TCU, who Dodds didn't want, got their invite.
