Two years ago. Now, not so much. Not close really, but in2009 I believe it was.
3 teams ranked in the top 5 near the end of the year. That's impressive.
I believe the SEC was a deeper conference, but the Big 12 south was a more difficult division within the conference.

2008 was the year the Big XII South was supposed to be so tough, and people thought so until after the bowl games. The division finished 4, 5, 12, 16 plus 2 teams that finished 4-8. They lost 3 of 4 bowl games including 0-2 against the SEC.
The SEC West last year had 5 teams in the top 15 plus the national champs with one team at 4-8.
