I think the Big 12 sealed it's fate when they didn't go after TCU hard after Nebraska and Colorado jumped ship.

That's straight up CUSA level. Missouri and BYU are only threats and even then moderate.

That's partly because they play OU in Dallas every year instead of home and home.

Could the big 12 look to add Utah maybe, along with BYU?
Possibly even Boise state who would love to get in a BCS conference?

Plus take up Fred Smith's $100M offer to take in Memphis. They wouldn't threaten anyone in football and they're only good at basketball when they cheat, but on the plus side fans get road trips to Beale Street.

BTW, is his offer still on the table?

Because of the massive population of the state of Texas and the belief, right or wrong, the networks have that the Longhorns deliver the Texas markets at a higher level than any other in-state university, I still believe that both the Pac 12 and the Big 10 would find a way to make the LHN work. Those conferences have two innovative, aggressive commissioners who know what it would mean on many levels to bring Texas into the fold.

Still, I think the Big 12 will go on with BYU as the 10th team.

I will be absolutely shocked if Houston is allowed to join the Big 12.

There is one other option for Texas no one is talking about.

I know you guys aren't big fans of the Texas AD DeLoss Dodds but he has been in his job for 30 years, is well respected and rarely speaks up about conference realignment issues.

During a luncheon on August 10th, he mentioned that, if A&M left, the possibility existed for Texas to form a new conference with ND. This is very different from cramming ND in the Big 12 North.

The PAC-12 and Larry Scott are definitely aggressive, I'll agree with you on that. They nearly had Texas and OU last year (even if they did have to take in Tech and OSU in the deal). Scott has a dream of a 16-team superconference; if he finds a way to make LHN work and keep conference stability he should run for POTUS.

Not too sold on the B1G making a run for Texas, though. If it expands it probably moves toward the northeast and mid-Atlantic areas.

big mistake for football fans if they go independent. with tv, maybe they can make more money. For example, Look at NOtre Dame. who cares about them? it has got to hurt recruiting that they dont belong to a conference with rivalries and a CHAMPIONSHIP!

I don't think Notre Dame has fallen into anonymity. shite, dude, they have their own national tv network for home games.

*ETA: As far as recruiting is concerned, they were 10th on Rivals for 2011, 14th for 2010, 21 in 2009, 2 in 2008, 8 in 2007, and 8 in 2006.

OK you can't have a two-team conference. Even if you toss in OU (and keep Oklahoma State since you may not have any choice if OU's in the picture) and BYU (your pick for the newest Big 12-2-1 member) that's still way too small for a conference to be viable.

Who else are you going to bring in?

The possibility he was referring to was supposed to be a "super" conference. I don't think it could happen, but it would be bad arse if it did.

The teams mentioned, from my own memory, were: BYU, UT, ND, Ohio State, Oklahoma, USC, Bama, and maybe a couple of others.

Yeah, good luck with that.

Forming a new conference requires a minimum of 7 teams and, given the schools that would be part of it, it would likely end up being the Big 12 with a few of the more useless members like Iowa State excised.

BYU--Possibly since this new "superconference" will let teams have their own networks
UT--duh
Notre Dame--see BYU but I don't know how sold they are on being in any conference
Oklahoma--will latch on to Bevo to keep the Red River Rivalry (maybe, see "dirt burglar" thread)

Beyond this:
USC--
Ohio State--
Bama--here's their response:

IMO, this is what will happen but it won't be a true conference per say. It will be more of an association for scheduling and getting the automatic bid. Revenues wouldn't be split. Everyone keeps their their earnings and pays a management fee to the conference. And I think these conversations are already happening and OU would be included. Otherwise, OU has to realize that their future isn't the Big 12 and they need to look out for themselves.

Before joining the SEC, South Carolina was part of the Metro Conference for all sports except football. Florida State was also a member and we'd play them each year in football even though we we were independents. I could see some similar arrangement for UT and ND.
