I just don't get it. People say no to playoffs b/c the bowl games are tradition and make cfb great yet it's ok to do away with great rivalries which are really what makes cfb special.

Is that a protected cross division rivalry? Is it on the chopping block?

No. Like I said, it's easy for ya'll to sit here and say 'end these games' when you're not a part of them. I don't know where the disdain for UF comes from, but it seems like LSU fans have been sour about the crossover games for years now.

Bama/Tenn and Auburn/UGA being important games with history is the real problem with getting rid of fixed opponents

The easiest fix might seem to be moving both Auburn and Bama to the East ... but then you still have an issue because if you add two teams to the west (e.g. A&M and Missouri) you still need to steal a vandy or kentucky from the east to keep the numbers even

For the sake of mostly irrational speculation let's say you ended up with this:

West:
A&M
Arky
LSU
Missouri
Ole Miss
MSU
Kentucky

East:
Florida
Bama
UGA
Auburn
Tenn
South Carolina
Vandy

The East would be absolutely brutal (Florida, Bama, UGA, Tenn, Auburn) and the West would look fairly weak (LSU would be the only probable top notch team with good but not elite programs like Arky, A&M, and Missouri also probably competing)

From a competitive point of view keeping Bama and Auburn in the west is much more balanced - it just looks very difficult to keep the traditional fixed opponents from opposite divisions (no 9 conference games per year is not a good solution when it costs you home games/money and leads to unequal schedules)

The Doc is talking out of his butt...these historical SEC rivalries aren't going anywhere. I would be pissed if they did.

If the conference stays with an 8 game schedule, I would be in favor of keeping the cross-divisional rivalry only where there is strong mutual interest from both schools, and just letting everyone else rotate. I would imagine that you would just end up with Bama/UT and Auburn/UGA as cross-divisional rivalries. That way, everyone else gets to cycle through conference opponents quicker.

I agree but as an LSU fan I don't think we see it the same way as lets say a Bama fan who likes facing Tennessee every year.

According to most Alabama fans, they'd trade the Third Saturday in October for the Iron Bowl. Apparently, TN is their real rival.

as a bama fan, that couldn't be farther from the truth. just a bunch of butt hurt gumps

Who cares about the annual USC-Ark matchup? This is an instance where I would vote for change.

That's what I said, but they swear up and down (bama fans on the SECr) that TN is y'alls true rival and we mean nothing.

Blow up the permanent rivals, and go to a true rotation. Home, off, away, off ad nauseum.

Cons: true rivals play half as much.
Pros: it's fair (UF doesn't have to play LSU annually while Vandy gets to beat up on Ole Miss); no four year layoffs

Let the rivalries develop organically.
