But it will blow up their network's ad revenue on a February night when it's -36 out.

Spent four years in Missouri. Kansas, Mizzou, and KState shouldn't sniff the SEC. They don't belong. Period. They add nothing for football. Recruiting wasteland. Kansas has the only arguement with basketball and they still aren't worth it. They'd be sucking the hind tit dry.

Expansion isn't about football or basketball prowess, its about the potential markets.

Last I checked, none of them were begging to get in. Just looking for a port to ride out the storm. KU's post-Big 12 preferences right now probably are:
1) Big Ten
2) Pac Ten
3) SEC
4) Any other BCS conference
5) Mountain West

Hockey IS about media markets in the Midwest. Wisconsin draws 15,000/game over a 36-game season, and most of the games are on Fox affiliates now.
I think it's about money. Plenty of people are going to tune in to watch Michigan, Ohio State, Penn State and Nebraska football. But what do you do to keep the netwok ad revenue rolling in between January and September? Hoops and hockey make Jan-March almost as profitable as the fall. (Hockey plays Fri & Sat., hoops almost every night) Nebraska scratches the football itch, and gets the championship game revenue. If they go past 12, it will be to help out the other sports and the network.
Dude, KANSAS, which has a premier program in one of the two major college sports, is being talked about maybe not being in a BCS conference. Football is king, and b-ball might be of small interest. Everything else is not considered.

my best guess is MU ends up as teh 16th team invited to the Big 10
Agreed. I still feel this is where they will end up. At least they should.

It seems to me the most of the Mizzou haters on this board are KU fans. I love when people say "Mizzou is a bunch or whiners because they don't like their bowl selections" as if our gripes are ridiculous but if you recall in 2007 Mizzou was 1 win away from playing for a national championship, had a number 1 ranking, a big 12 north title, and they ended up giving the orange bowl to KU. Yes Mizzou got blown out by 21 points on national TV for the Big 12 title and it is Mizzou who came out flat on nobody's fault but their own. But really, Kansas gets the orange bowl who Mizzou beat up on just 2 weeks prior. So yes we were a little taken by surprise with the Cotton Bowl selection but we quickly moved on and in that game just ended up destroying that Arkansas (Mcfadden and Jones) team by 31 points, that same Arkansas team which beat the soon to be National Champions LSU. So please excuse Mizzou for being "whiners".

For the record, I thought MU was fully justified in their being upset about the Big-XII bowl selection process. But their seriously entertaining discussion about leaving really added momentum to the process. Osborne cited it in NU's decision to look for greener pastures. And I still think MU would be a great fit in the Big-10.
As long as the Big-12 exists, we will all still be Texass' revenue-generating pawns. And this from a fan of a school that is in the top tier in Big-12 revenue distributions:
1. Texas: $10.2 million
2. Oklahoma: $9.8 million
3. Kansas: $9.24 million
4. Texas A&M: $9.22 million
5. Nebraska: $9.1 million
6. Missouri: $8.4 million
7. Texas Tech: $8.23 million
8. Kansas State: $8.21 million
9. Oklahoma State: $8.1 million
10. Colorado: $8.0 million
11. Iowa State: $7.4 million
12. Baylor: $7.1 million

I just hope KU and Mizzou end up at a major power conference (not MWC) Between the Pac10, SEC, BigTen or Big East. You can't tell me that KU and Mizzou are not one of the top 64 athletic programs in the country (assuming these conferences eventually go to 16 teams)

big picture on those revenue numbers -
1) it's a fairly small difference in payout - yes, IMO they should just equally share it out for the sake of political peace but...
2) the bigger deal is all of those numbers are dwarfed by the numbers paid out by big 10 and sec schools right now - that's the biggest issue and why schools like nebraska listen when the big 10 expresses an interest

If the Big 12 Commissioner Dan Beebe would have looked out for schools that did not have Texas in their name or a burnt orange team color with a longhorn mascot, none of this talk would be going on now.
It was the BigTen who leaked which schools they were interested in. Yes Mizzou flirted a little but so did NU and it was NU that pursued this officially with a Big Ten application and Texas who was originally asking for Big 12 loyalty pledges from the other schools only they are the ones ready to bolt to the PAC10 next week. Texas is chasing fresh money and somehow that is Mizzou's fault. It is all very laughable.

if that was the motivation for looking around then MU made a mistake

yes, Big ten made a play - IMO with the intention of forcing ND to join them

agree. Texas seems to be the one throwing their weight around more than anyone else
