Chip Brown, the man who is more in the loop than pretty much anyone on this expansion issue, has a new article on orangebloods. Here's an excerpt:

quote:

Orangebloods.com has been told by sources that Gov. Rick Perry would encourage his alma mater [TAM] to go where Texas goes to keep harmony in the Texas Legislature. There is a state-run, multi-billion dollar mineral rights endowment for both Texas and Texas A&M called the Permanent University Fund, which was threatened by lawmakers the last time realignment happened (when the Big 12 was formed) if the two schools split up.

What I gather from that is that if TAM comes then Texas comes too, and I just don't see any way that that happens.

chip brown reports what the texas athletic department wants him to. so far, everything has gone according to plan for them. not saying he isn't right this time, but he's going to report that a&m is stuck with texas regardless of whether they are or not.

I think he's right. They are a package deal. I hope they come to SEC, but I just don't know. I'd rather them added and see the ACC raid the Big East

Living in Austin and having to listen to Chip daily, I can tell you this guy is an idiot. Not saying he is right or wrong on this but he is a UT puppet. So don't take what he says to the bank.

The PUF will have no effect on what conferences these schools belong to. This is just Chip Brown talking out of his arse because he wants this Pac-10 deal more than anything. Every public school in the state shares money from that fund.

i would think the texas gov would let them seperate if they are both on solid ground. they stepped in when aTm didnt have much of a landing spot, so they blocked a UT-to-the-SEC move to help the little guy. texas would be fine where ever they go without aTm- not the sam ethe other way round

texas needs one of OU or A&M to go with them. Otherwise they will have a tough time keeping those 2 rivalries. If neither is with them, i doubt they want to OOC games with those guys. Texas/OU is the big rivalry, but within Texas too many politicaly strong people want to make sure the Texas/A&M rivalry stay

I just don't understand why Texas wants to go out to the uninterested west coast to play football?

Exactly. He's their go to guy for sending out trial balloons. I hear all of this joined a the hip talk from Texas, and not a lot of it from A&M. Texas kind of now needs A&M to go with them as a show of strength.

there's probably truth to that

if say A&M were to hold out and go to the SEC then the new PAC loses some Texas attention to teh SEC - but they still have a pretty viable conference if they add a Utah or TCU or Houston instead

If Texas still wants the new pac deal - but both OU and A&M opt out? Then they are probably pretty unhappy about most of the regional powers being in a different conference

why would anyone care is they split up? I'm sure many would like to see them stay together, but so much so they'd cut funding for higher education? That would look reall good in the next election.

They threated it last time because the Gov and Lt Gov were Baylor grads, if BU got left out they would have lost out on tons of $. The Big 12 needed 1 more team anyway, what difference did it make if it was BU, TCU or UH? None.

A&M going to the SEC and UT somewhere else does not adversly affect either team and probably benefits A&M, though they don't seem to get that.

Texas appears to be worried that if the SEC is an option for kids that want to stay in Texas - that more kids would end up choosing a school other than Texas. Probably mostly A&M but some to LSU and Arky as well

Highly likely. It would put another conference presence deep within the borders of Texas. I am gonna go out on a limb and say that it has something to do with the mentality to tie the Texas schools to the U.of Texas

I hear A&M is pregnant with Texas' baby, Baylor doesn't have a date to the prom, and USC just got diagnosed with AIDS!
