If Texas AM bolts i think you could see the B1G sweep in and offer Missouri, Kansas and Pittsburgh. The B1G would then expand the league schedule to 10
I can see the B1G expanding again, but I don't see why they'd go to 10 games automatically and I don't think they'd do that just to screw ND.
My hunch is Delany's ultimate wet dream would be to grab Notre Dame and Texas. I know everyone says they won't accept the LHN, but it would be a few years down the road and we'll see how the LHN does.

That is not true. Texas in the end will not get bank. Their Longhorn Network Contract will all be adjusted because they will be left out in the cold and without a Conference that wants their greed/bullying. Texas is not ND. ND is the only school that really can make Indy work because just about every Catholic follows ND and they have tradition equal to about none. Even then, ND is a joke now. Texas does not have near the national following ND has, not even close. And who would want to see Texas play the loose Army and Navy's each year. In the long run Texas will become irrelevant outside looking in at the 4-5 large power Conferences that control everything.
BTW, BYU is a little different. They have a national following because you have so many Mormons all across America. But even then, they too will be irrelevant outside a major power Conference. They already were in the MWC, but now going Indy will only make that 5 times worse.
conferences do not make or break teams being relevant... only performance on the field determines that

I think being in different leagues and not playing any more is good for both universities. Now that the Baylor & Tech bonds have been loosed, I hope Texas can (in order of my preference):
1. Go to the Big 10 with ND
2. Go to the Pac 16
3. Start the new rumored conference with ND
Texas is far too arrogant and greedy. You guys are and will be a cancer to any conference you are in until you are more reasonable about money sharing.

I always said I would be around wither way. Part of me still thinks some political reindeer games may happen on Monday but I just want this to be over so Texas can get clarity on its situation.

And even if they did cut A&M's funding over an athletic conference, its not like it would be permanent or irreversible. There will be another election. You think 5, 10 years from now people will care? Will they really reduce funding to A&M over a football conference?
Baylor people will be pissed about the Big 12 blowing up for at least a generation. As for what the legislature could do, I have always wondered about this myself. That blowhard politician certainly made some strong implications.

good for them, the vast majority of people will not give a frick. Life has gone on at Rice/SMU/UH and TCU.

yes that they could cut funding, he can't do that unilaterally however and will have to face re election. Cuts of that kind can easily be undone in the next budget. The fact that some BU people might be butt hurt for years that they make less from FB is not enough to generate the support to cripple an outstanding institution of higher learning out of spite.

conferences do give you opponents to play and a goal (winning the conference) to accomplish. BCS conference winners also get an automatic bid to a prestigious, well paying bowl. So being in a conference gives you 2 ways to make a BCS bow, auto bid or at large. An Indy is only eligible for 1 of 3 or 4 at large spots.

I guess the politics do mean something after all:

Rep. Dan Branch said A&M officials have told him they won't be making final decision at Monday meeting. Will authorize pres to negotiate.

Now the SEC meeting has been called off:

Big Kat? Ball Gravy? You guys took me to task about my belief that politics would play a big role in this. The genesis of this very thread was because:
- it was announced that A&M had 100% joined the SEC (which has turned out to be bogus)and.....
- A&M had done it with almost no political resistance.
Now, politics are heavily involved, meetings are being cancelled, promised announcements are being skipped over, A&M is scrambling to pacify the Legislative committee on higher education.
I think you guys need to man up and do some hat tipping of your own......

Frankly, from this:

It seems like it's either SEC politics (Slive didn't have his ducks in a row as to whether or not the SEC presidents would vote with him) or that they simply don't have the 14th team yet (SEC will not go with 13 unless an acceptable other is on board). Teams from the ACC would have to decide by Mon if they are going to join up in 2012. There probably just isn't enough time to get it done. Nothing you have posted shows it is due to TX politics.

a. it would be hilarious to watch TAMUdo all of this to get approval to move to the SEC, only to have the SEC go lol wut?

It definitely has to do with TX politics. A&M is a state school. They may leave for another conference - if not this year - in the future. But, they certainly can't afford to burn any bridges with the politics involved. They have been talking big, moving meetings etc. to attempt to show they are relevant. In the end, they had to crawfish and back down some. A&M threw their temper tantrum and whined like a baby about the Longhorn network - picked up their ball and threatened to play with someone else. But, now they may not be wanted by the SEC and now they may have to go back, head down and humiliated to play where they were to begin with. I hope that is what happens. They bring nothing to the SEC except for an inferiority complex.

Will something PLEASE happen with this? I'm tired of all the "Yes. Wait, no. Well, maybe. Okay, yes. NEVERMIND."
Posted on 8/13/11 at 6:06 pm to Dr Drunkenstein
I didn't say there wouldn't be political pressure. I said it wouldn't matter. And so far, it hasn't. A&M still plans to go to the SEC. The only hang-up is some of the SEC school presidents balking at who the 14th team will be.
I think they want UNC but UNC politics could keep them tied to NC St and Duke.
We'll see. I still think A&M will be in the SEC. Where I thought it was near 100% certain, I now think it's more 85-90% certain

The ball is in aggy's court. Silve has so much as said the SEC cannot afford to appear to have a contract breech. Once aggy clears the political hurdles it is over. Still, the more intriguing question is who is 14th?
I vote for USCw

It's 100% on our end. The only hurdle that is left is Slive getting the President's to vote. He would like it to be unanimous.
But WTF is the 14th? I've been all over the place with this. Clemson, GT, and FSU all seem to be getting blocked by UGA, UF and USCe. VT burned it's get out of jail free card when it hopped to the ACC and is now tied to UVA. UNC will get political pressure to keep research triangle in the same conference. Mizzou would love to come but does the SEC want to have to move Auburn and mess with rivalry games (Bama/Tenn)?
Dammit, who is the other team?
