Yea, Harbaugh turns down Michigan so Les gets the job so he can then come to LSU!

I think it is plausible...

No particular order

Calhoun
Hoke
Golden
Mullen

Harbaugh is NFL bound. IMO, Peterson and Patterson are not going anywhere. And I don't want a coordinator.

That would definitely be a negative IF he were to take another college job. It would be Saban all over again with the NFL rumors every year. But I would take it.

Agreed

frick no

And I really like Hoke and Mullen, with Hoke probably being #1. Calhoun is solid.

under most circumstances, i would totally agree. i just think malzahn is a rock star. we can grab him now on the ground floor, or we can get someone else, watch malzahn kill it at moo state, then try to lure him away in 3 years. i think we might as well grab him now.

and i'll admit, its a big time swing. its either going out of the park or will completely miss. will be interesting if the LSU brass picks another yes man and keeps the boat going 9-3 every year, or if they make the statement they want to win championships. i guess we'll see...

I agree. Very solid coach. Do you think Golden would be an upgrade, lateral, or downgrade move from Miles? I know its opinion, but I will say lateral on this one overall.

thats why i want malzahn. he has the highest ceiling of any person we could possibly bring in.

All coaches are a risk, but I think a coordinator is a much bigger one. Malzahn has 0 HC experience in college. For a program at the level of LSU, we should be raiding mid to upper level teams of experienced HC's.

For LSU:

1. Stoops
2. Harbaugh
3. Petrino
4. Mullen
5. Patterson

At a major program like LSU, I would not be interested in guys who have no experience as a head coach in college or the pro's. So head coaching experience is a must. I think that coordinators need to get their "on the job training" at lower level places. LSU football is important to a lot of people (and the University) and the pressure is very high, so fans and alumni would have little patience with a guy who has never been a HC before.

Stoops may be a long shot, but it would be worth a shot. He nearly took the ND job last year from what I've heard, and probably would have if they offered more. He may be ready for a change of scenery and would have better recruiting ground at LSU.

I love Harbaugh. Great recruiter and perfect style of play for LSU.

Petrino and Mullen are at lower tier SEC schools, but are doing more with less.

Patterson appears to be a good coach, but I question how many elite teams he has faced. He also has an insular coaching record at mostly smaller places. I don't know if he could be a great recruiter either. Franchione was pretty good at TCU as well, but flopped in the big time.

Agreed.

When making a big hire (and expending a lot of money on salaries), it is critical to look at who has the "highest floor". A lot of people look at potential and ceiling, but ignore the huge bust rate.

Guys who have head coaching experience and had a lot of success are MUCH less likely to fail.

chip kelly was the head guy at new hampshire and an OC(at oregon) for a year or 2. things seem to be working out just fine. guys who are successful everywhere they go, will be successful.

wow. this is terrible thinking. i would rather the AD go all-in and try to get the best guy opposed to find the guy who will least likely fail

Malzahn has done a great job w/ an all-world QB. Wasn't he coaching high school like within the past 5 yrs? Certainly a well-regarded OC ... ready to take over a head coaching job at a major D1 school? Don't know about that.

I said that it was a factor, but not the only factor. And when your top candidate (Mahlzahn) has never been a HC anywhere that matters, I think you're ignoring this factor.

Looking at "highest ceiling" simply because the guy has been a good coordinator will get you (off the top of my head) Mike Archer, Bob Davie, Charlie Weis, Gary Gibbs, Randy Shannon, Larry Coker, Mike Shula, Steve Sarkisian. All of those guys were successful coordinators.

I would want a guy who is a proven leader. Not someone who I'd have to guess or extrapolate whether he has the necessary leadership and organizational skills to be the head guy. I think you vastly underrate the difference between being a head coach and an assistant, and the differences in responsibilities and necessary skills.

Most head coaches who have succeeded at high profile jobs - Spurrier, Carroll, Tressell, Brown, Holtz, Saban, Meyer would all say that they need every year of HC experience to handle the pressure and responsibilities at their bigger jobs.

he had the 14th overall offense with newton last year. he had top 2 offenses at tulsa in 07, 08. and he led the 06 arkansas offense to 20th in the ncaa in his only year there.

yes

hes going to get a midlevel job somewhere, and kill it there until a big dog tried to lure him away. why not cut out the middle, have some foresight, and have him resurrect our offense for 2011? keep chavis to run the D. malzahn is not going to forget how to coach offense..........
