Well he sucked. Just like Polian. Just like whoever the hell coached them in ‘23. Kelly needs to sort it out. At least Thomas gives us a fucking return game at last. We went TWO YEARS literally conceding punt returns, a school that used to shite out elite return men.

Absolutely agreed, it’s ridiculous at this point. And Jake Olsen has to fucking go too, need to go find a safety’s coach.

Bill Parcells said the fastest way to improve a bad team was to improve special teams.

You don’t have to remove a coach to get another on field assistant, and even if you did, we have one open following Nagles departure

You can't get rid of Olsen yet. Maybe he's bad maybe not. The point is, you can't put on him with what he had this year. Gilbert, Burns, and Ryan have all been under multiple coaches and they're the same player each time. At some point you have to hold the players accountable.

Idk if olsen is good or not but i do know in the height of the DBU days either Raymond or Cooper coached all the DBs. Of course bringing in Busch via Aranda paid off because Busch was the conduit for getting Burrow but the DBs haven’t been the same since 2020. Some insiders have said Raymond was fine just coaching the CBs but idk…we need a damn ST coach. Anyone watching these playoff games has to see it. The pass rush coach obviously paid dividends.

That’s the problem, he couldn’t develop anybody the end of the year to take their place. Those guys are trash and yet after the bowl game you see why those guys had to play the entire year.

had also been a special teams coach before.

This. Most P5 programs don’t have a dedicated ST coach. They have a hybrid who also does something else, and that’s likely what we are going to do too. Just make a better hire, because there are PLENTY of them out there who are very good at handling ST as well as TEs, OLBs, etc.

With the new rules there’s just no excuse for having this set up at any school, LSU or otherwise

Ohio St is the only of the last 4 that apparently has a GA or analyst or whatever in charge of ST. Penn State’s guy is mainly the ST coach but also works with the OLBs. ND has a guy (they made a huge difference yesterday) and UT has Jeff Banks.

I can’t speak for those schools but when it’s been such a weakness as it’s been here you need to address it. Our FG operation the second half of the year was insanely bad.

Like you mentioned PSU guy also coaches a position as does Jeff banks (he’s TE coach and special teams) and just like the ND coach (he’s ST and DBs), literally none of the 4 teams left have dedicated ST coordinators, it’s not something anyone does. Yall need to get over it

They are primarily ST coaches. Banks is an oddball but considered one of the best and is also a good recruiter. Slade Nagle? No one knows who the frick that is. You can’t tell me we should not expect more from that unit.

Meh. You can hire guys as glorified analysts, but if they aren’t one of the 10 recruiting staff members (this has NOT changed), they aren’t making as much money and the job isn’t viewed as prestigious. You aren’t attracting a premium dedicated ST coach offering that role and we likely aren’t wasting a recruiting spot on a guy like that.

Just look at the comments above- the final 4 teams have hybrid coaches. There are more of them available. Hire one who has a better track record with ST and hire a couple of good analysts to help him with it.

If you want to know why other programs aren’t going crazy spending on massively expanding then staffs yet- revenue sharing is right around the corner. No one is spending like crazy until they know how that will impact their budgets.
