per footballcoachscoop.com - The same website that brought us the Miles to Dallas rumor.

quote:

We have learned that former Georgia Defensive Coordinator Willie Martinez has interviewed for the vacant Defensive Coordinator position with Head Coach Urban Meyer.

I'm sure CUM just wanted to pick a former UGA coach's (small) brain.

He actually interviewed for the linebackers coach position, not defensive coordinator.

Oh my. That would be worse than the team just playing without a DC.

martinez has a reputation as a strong recruiter with south florida ties...he played at miami..he is also a very solid position coach...for whatever reason he tanked at DC...he would be a good addition to coach safeties...if hired he will slide over and coach safeties and heater would coach the LB's and most likely would be promoted to co DC with mccarney

Sources tell us that Willie Martinez interviewed for the vacant Safeties Coach position at Florida, not the Defensive Coordinator. Also, Head Coach Urban Meyer has interviewed Tommy Thigpen (Auburn Secondary Coach for the same position.

I hope he coaches the safeties because the UGA secondary as a whole was pretty bad in recent years. It would make more sense if he coaches the linebackers since that seemed to be his defense's only strength with Curran and Ellerbe.

If he's just coaching safeties it's a great hire. He's a terrific secondary coach. Just made a horrible DC - much like Ron Cooper.

Martinez is pretty good as a DB coach, but that's where he needs to stay. Waaayyy over his head stepping into the DC role.

As has been stated, CWM was a FANTASTIC DB coach before taking the DC role in Athens. From 2001 to 2004, our secondary was downright nasty. He coached the likes of Thomas Davis, Sean Jones, Greg Blue, Jermaine Phillips, Tim Wansley, etc. When we had a fiery LB coach and DC (Van Gorder), we were solid. For whatever reason, when he took over as DC we tanked. Having him as strictly a DB coach would be a smart move for any team.
