It gives LSU the opportunity to attract a coach that can count to three. It will also allow the LSU administration to rid itself of the embarrasment that they have endured throughout the entirety of the season. Les is not going to win another national championship here, he is just not. Do you ask remember the scrutiny he was under throughout the first part if the season. That scrutiny was becomed by most of you all. Coaches were at arms with each other, blaming everyone but themselves. I believe in the long run lsu will benefit immensely from les's departure.

Alleva is going to try to either keep Miles and if that does not work expedite the process of losing him and getting a replacement quick. It does way more harm to LSU if this process is extended.

Because this is how contracts work. Say Miles actually wants to go to UM, but UM says they can't get the extra 1.25 million for the buyout. If you're LSU, do you keep a coach here against his will? No, you don't because your product may suffer from him wanting to be somewhere else. A contract is nothing more than a loose agreement between 2 parties. It has very little worth outside of that.

Probably not likely in today's world, but it could be that there is enough respect for the type of man Miles is and the way he's represented the university, that if that's where his heart is and he really wants it, LSU will be willing to allow him to make the move. That would only be possible IF LSU has already reached an agreement with another coach who would not be subject to a contract buyout of his own (therefore, no real need for the cash)......food for thought.

I didn't say it was a good argument. It's called game theory and contract negotiations. Let's say UM refuses to pay it, but Les wants the job. You force him to stay and live out the contract? If so, your making a management mistake.

It looks so bad on the university if we dont get that money. You have to consider that even though the athletic departmet is seperate the university as a whole is in a huge budget crisis and cuts are coming left and right. Then need to get that money to save face

This is silly.
If Michigan cannot afford the buyout, they cannot afford the discussion.
LSU would malpractice if it relieved Les of the buyout. Michigan is going to pay it anyway and it will form the basis of the signing bonus we will offer to any good new headcoach.
Put differently, how would you like to go to fifnacial supporters and tell them we need money to sign someone new, but just gave away 1.5 million to lose our existing coach
