How do you know the boosters would consider the replacement to be a worse coach, without knowing who that might be?

lol. I realize, but that doesn't mean these things don't need to be said. If anyone thinks it's a gaurantee that UM pays the full/some of the buyout, they're delusional.
You don't keep an employee around that wants to be somewhere else. That's why every coach under contract gets permission to speak with another school.

Because he hasn't won a championship yet. The elite salary status should be earned on the field.

I don't care if Michigan can't or just won't pay the buyout. It's not a contract between LSU and Michigan, it's a contract between LSU and Les Miles. If he leaves for Michigan, LSU should hold Les to the stipulations, just like Les would hold LSU if he was fired.

Because of your point...you don't want to keep him here if he really wants to be elsewhere. But, the buyout is reasonable and affordable for either Les Miles or Michigan. shite, they paid most, if not all, of RR's $4 million buyout to West Virginia, so we even have precedent that they can afford it. LSU shouldn't budge on the Michigan buyout.

I'm not disagreeing with anything you're saying. But a negotiation is a negotiation, and 1 side is going to blink.
Does UM say f it and go get Hoke instead over 1.25m? Probably not. But LSU may or may not believe that.
