going from a NFL DL coach to a college DC gig is a lateral movement at worst.

Ed likes CFB more, plus he'll probably demand big bucks in the college ranks, probably more than at the Saints.

I'd imagine college plays to his strengths more. He'll probably head the recruiting effort at UT and if he does a good job at DC, he'll be a head coach again.

College DC>NFL DL coach. Should get paid more at UT than he does with the Saints. He's a really good recruiter as well.

It's very difficult to advance in the NFL from the DL position. If you look at all the current NFL DC's, only about 2-3 have a background as a DL coach. Most (about 2/3) have LB backgrounds and the rest DB. Since most 1st time HCs get there from a coordinator position, his aspirations would most likely be limited.
