Why hasn't Riley been offered more money with OU if he isn't leaving?

Riley extension July 2020
quote:

He’ll make $6.15 million in 2020, officially a $150,000 increase. And the six-year, $45.21 million deal gives him an annual salary of $7.535 million through 2025.

With Tucker getting that huge new deal and word of the LSU contract to pay him $12 million per year, it seems to me that OU would want to give him a deal that is in line with the going market rate if they want to keep him. Every day that passes without that news feels deafening.

With him not agreeing to such a deal, doesn't it make the reported LSU offer and agreement even more credible? Especially with his weak arse denial earlier this week. Just a thought

Folks have been saying their in a tight spot because of what they have to cough up for the SEC deal, no idea if that's true or not

They’re still in the regular season with the potential/probable big 12 championship. They probably feel they have a bit of time to hash it all out.

They will & they might already have this offer, but no need to release the info now. OU is in the middle of trying to win their conference.

LSU & Coach O were having conversations about his contract all week after UK game & nothing came out until Sunday after UF. OU can keep things quiet internally.

This has been my thought. From the OU side, what benefit would come out of offering him now, just for LSU to come over the top?

If I were them I'd wait LSU out until the last minute then offer.

If they want to get out of the Big XII before 2025, they're staring down the barrel of a $75 million penalty.

That would put any school in the country in a tight spot.

Kinda my thinking there as well. What do they really have to lose? Deals typically aren't signed until after the end of the season, and biding their time a little while only puts LSU in a position to either move on or risk losing out on other candidates.

The only problem there is Woody has stated that he is not going to let a timeline affect his decision. He's going to get the best possible even if it carries past the CFP.

My theory is if he likes his chances at a Natty maybe he wants to negotiate later?

I highly doubt he thinks he's getting a natty this year. They barely win any game they play.

They wouldn't until they know what to match, counter with or just say no to.

They still have leverage with the contract buy out. Besides, we shouldn’t forget he didn’t come looking for us.

Plausible, if I were OU though I would make my offer now and if Riley accepted it I would announce it. It totally shuts down any talk and allows the team to focus on the season. Also will cement the incoming commitments coming in.

Same for Mel Tucker. MSU had no reason to come out in the middle of their season and offer him an extension either. I think if Lincoln Riley is OU's guy and they dont want that to change, they come out sooner rather than later to tell LSU hands off we locked him down. Just my $0.02.

This justification doesn’t make sense to me. How would announcing an extension for their superstar HC have any effect on OU football outside of possibly energizing the fans/team?

LSU has reasons to wait. OU does not. See MSU.

So is Michigan State who is still in contention for the Big 10 championship.

He hasn’t signed yet, and there are reports of the administration holding up the extension. He’s not the coach surrounded by smoke either. Plus MSU has had good coaches plucked away. OU hasn’t. May affect the mindset.

Either way I’m just guessing here.

You could be right. I feel like until Riley makes a definitive denial or signs a new extension with OU, there’s a chance he signs with LSU. May be wishful thinking on my part.
