Why do NFL coaches get fired so often?

I don't really understand the mentality of these owners. Is it as simple as ticket sales? and a "New Coach equals new excitement and more ticket sales"?
These head coaches get hired and fired seemingly every 2 or 3 years. Assistant coaches have even worse turnover.
Maybe I am wrong and it just seems that way?
Doesn't the constant ebb and flow in leadership prevent building something great?
You have to have the right players and that takes time. Right?
Why is the NFL such a nut grinder for Coaches?
I know they get paid a lot of money but it seems they don't have a chance to succeed.
The Colts owner keeping the HC surprised people today but maybe that was a good move?

I think the college game will continue to attract great coaches with great pay!

In the NFL it is easier to fire coaches than players. Therefore it is a lot easier to change coaches than (big) players.
I'm not sure if it started with free-agency, but it does seem like somewhere in the 90s, coaches tenures became much shorter. Consequently, player development took a nose dive (particularly at the QB position).
I'm old, but constant turnover in a coaching staff seems bad to me unless you are upgrading each time (and not the entire staff).

The whole Pagano firing mumble was driving me insane.
I've heard it all year, but it made absolutely no sense to me.
I guess there is some reason left in the NFL after all.

It's pretty standard for most professional sports.

maybe... maybe.. it was a good move to keep Pagano. I mean they had some miserable luck (no pun intended) with QB health this year.
but keeping the GM? Lol... yeah.. that is a joke.
I hear you though, it is crazy how many coaches get fired or "resign" each year now.
a lot of times these moves aren't very calculated because they only have a few weeks before they need to hit the road scouting and forming the rest of their coaching staff.
now if by chance a team has had a guy in mind for awhile and get him then at least you can die with your boots on... no regrets.
but it just seems like a lot of time the decisions are rushed is all. So how can it be surprising when things don't work out and 2-3 years later you feel like you haven't made progress?
Cleveland was a little different when they hired Pettine. I mean he was their 4th or 5th option so he was sort hired by default.

Only difference between the way it's conducted here and other companies is their is a much more cut and dry success/failure scale than most other companies

its the social media/instant gratification world we live in now, and owners and GMs are freaking out because attendance is down and people are staying home to watch games.
lose a couple of games in a row and people start staying home and watching in there media rooms and 80 inch TVs, so people freak out and think "we have to do something". also its a domino effect, once a few guys get canned for subpar seasons, the fans start asking "why arent we following suit?"
i agree it sucks. look at marvin lewis in Cin, he should have been fired 2-3 times but they stuck with him and he won 12 games, some with a backup QB.

The job security in the NFL is actually very good compared to other pro sports. In MLB, there's only been three current managers who's been the manager of their team since the beginning of the 2009 season. Same with the NBA and NHL. In the NFL, there's been six coaches who's been HC of the same team since 2009 and the only coach from that bunch who might move on in the near future is Sean Payton. So all of the coaches getting fired is more due to the nature of pro sports than the impatience of NFL owners.

The college game is different. Loads different. You aren't stepping into a situation where you have QBs with a wealth of experience in college. You deserve time there.
With the NFL, you have the playmakers. If your schemes and coaching ability doesn't work, you're done.

It's simply easier to fire one coach than overhaul a roster. It's the reason why the Saints fire the DC every two years and expect better results.
