Why did Michigan wait so long to fire Rich Rod?

Does anyone here really believe that the bowl game was the final nail in the coffin? I dont..they were going to axe him regardless of the outcome in my opinion. So why wait?

Because their main targets both had bowl games in January to coach...And the decreased buyout, plus they played their bowl game on Jan 1

Because his buyout decreased after NYD. I believe it fell by $2.5M to $1.5M total. Or the other way around.

I heard it had to do with the date affecting how much the buyout on his contract was... after Jan 1 the buyout decreased, and at that point they might as well let him coach the bowl.

So your thinking if they would've done it sooner, Les would've had time to interview earlier. Maybe in between Cotton Bowl interviews or windsprints in Cowboy stadium. Nice thread

The way his contract was structured it would have cost the school an extra 1.5 million to fire him before January 1.

Our AD stated that part of the reason is he doesnt feel it is fair to the players when the coach is fired. They should get to enjoy their bowl experience with the ones who got them there.

This may have been visible to those who watched from outside; interesting that Fla St just locked up Jimbo a couple days ago. FWIW I'd have preferred Jimbo, with him keeping Chief etc, over Pelini.
Don't forget in the grand scheme of things, in order to move up in the rankings, someone else has to drop. If Mich leaves LSU hanging in the wind with our pants down, they not only get their coach, but screw up a potential top-5 program too. Which is good for them.

When you are waiting with baited breath hoping to win 8 games....not so much.

Les is a manager, not a schemes guy; he doesn't force a team to play a certain style of offense or defense like Saban for example.
For the sake of discussion, let's say Les were to keep the offensive scheme intact, but pull in a solid defensive coach like Chief- where would Michigan be in yr 1, 2, 3? In the meantime, assuming we get Pelini at LSU, who likely would revamp the defense to his liking, where is LSU in that time period?
