Serious question. If we’re talking about a 3-4 defense most people would assume Saban or Kirby but I don’t have a concrete person in my mind for the 4-3/4-2-5 defense. Brent Venables maybe?

Yeah I feel we view him mainly through the prism of the championships he’s won at Clemson. He also had very nasty Dlines (through great recruiting) and an easier path to the playoff being able to dominate lesser opponents in the mostly weak ACC. On the other hand it’s gonna be scary to see what he’s gonna do with the amount of elite talent at every defensive position (not just Dline) they are bringing in yearly now

Easily Venables.

Marcus Freeman runs a great multiple defensive scheme 4-3, 3-3-5 (that they actually implemented fully for the first time vs UCF last year and have run with it), and a 4-2-5.

I have no idea but I think any number of coaches could excel at it with the necessary talent. If LSU commits to the 4-3/nickel and recruits that way, it can and will work. You just have to have the interior pass rushers like Roy and Smith in the middle and every-down DE's who can rush the passer and can also play the run.

While Venables is the best one, Chad Glasgow has done a very good job at TCU. They run the 4-2-5 and have been pretty good on defense.

How much of the TCU D does Patterson run?

Just curious.

Don’t forget Guillory. He will be a monster in the middle.

If LSU doesn’t make a hard push for freeman I’ll be very disappointed. I think he fits everything we are looking for. Who cares if he leaves in a few years to be a HC, if he leaves that means he was a success. I don’t understand why he’s not being mentioned as the #1 candidate. I can only hope they are keeping it on the down low, but I will very disappointed as a fan if we don’t make a legitimate run at him.
