White Whales..

Saban, Kirby.

Defense wins championships, innovative offenses get solved.

Elko at A&M will be up there in a year or two. They're destroying it on the recruiting trail.

Aranda is at the top of this list for me. The only other guy i'd even entertain as being in the top tier is venables, and imo even venables is not on his level (I think a sneaky proportion of venables's success owes to stealing signs).

Other guys worth mentioning are kirby, dan lanning, jim leonhard, jeff hafley, luke fickell, marcus freeman, mike elko, phil parker, alex grinch.

I don't think Saban belongs on this list at all. Even with huge talent advantages his defense gets lit up a lot.

Unparalleled recruiter, coaches technique well, and makes his team play physical but he's wandering in the wilderness in this era.

Defensively - its Leonhard and second place is not even close. His defense right now is shutting down offenses. Wisconsin 's biggest problem is its offense. Followed up by Aranda and then by Schiano who does more with 3* kids than anybody else.

Offensively - Leach's teams once that offense gets going is hard to defend as was evident last week against a pretty good Auburn defense. Despite what is happening at Florida , Mullen does a real good job and tOSU ...whomever is handling the offense is doing a damn good job....scored better than 50 pts 5 X this season.

Saban is academic; he is the institution as it relates to defensive coaching. You should really go listen to his coaching clinics.

I guarantee all these coaches listed have been to one of his clinics. He understands and communicate the intricacies of technique at every position on defense especially DBs.

I wouldn’t look at his current defenses as a reflection of his defensive coaching prowess, because he now has an offense that can keep his defenses in games.

That would've been true a decade ago. Not anymore.

CBS put together a montage of all his keys to defending spread offenses. He still doesn't know from an X/O perspective.

Help for Nick

There's a reason he had to get better on offense. All to his credit and it's a big reason he's the GOAT CFB HC.

I think you sent the wrong clip. Saban is the architect of the modern 3-4 defense in college; from coaching to personnel. It’s as true today as it was a decade ago; the only difference now is his age.

Aranda, Kirby, and Venables are all on that next level as it relates to defensive coaching.

Saban’s defense is fundamentally very simple but has to executed at a high level in order to be effective. He forces everything up the middle and over the top.

He innovated his offense because of officiating; RPOs. That’s the difference between him and Kirby; Saban gave up a little on defense to gain a lot on offense. I also believe the new NCAA allotted practice times have also played a factor.
