When should a coach announce that he is leaving for a different program?

For us folks, its 2-3 weeks, but when should a Coach tell the team/ admin? What would an ideal time table look like on announcement/ new coach coming in/ etc? He/she is a leader of young men and just leaving with a short notice doesn't feel right.

After the season but before the bowl game for players
The earlier the better for admin so that you give them time to put feelers out

Once he's agreed, he should immediately inform his current administration and let them decide how to proceed.

You think before bowl? I would feel bad for the seniors if they went to a bowl game they worked all year for with a interim coach.

Sunday or Monday. This is big boy football. Frick all of you people worried about 20 year old feelings for Christ sake.

I agree with that.
I just think all the speculation for a month or so is unnecessary.

As soon as possible after the season. The current school is paying him to do a job. That job is coaching the football team and that should take precedent until the season ends (bowl game excluded). However, once the coach knows he's going to leave at the end of the season, he should tell his current employer as soon as practically possible to allow his currently employer the best opportunity to replace him.

It happens all the time. Bowl season is meaningless unless your team is in the playoffs. You want to use all that time making the transition to your new job and setting up recruiting plans.

That often comes with a counteroffer...which is when many of these deals fall apart.

With big time coaches, money really isn't the issue. They will get paid no matter where they coach.
If your school/employer has been good to you, why put them behind the 8 ball?
