Pete Carroll was USC's third choice and the Trojan fanbase was melting hard. I remember it well.

Does it really?
Georgia, USC, Texas, Florida, Notre Dame, Tennessee, have ALL had to "settle" for less than homerun hires in the last few years
LSU pulling Fisher away from FSU would be a huge coup and really unprecedented over the last 10 years. You could argue that in recent times, only Arkansas was able to pull away a championship level coach (at least conf. champions) from another successful big time program. It's FAR more likely LSU couldn't get Fisher to leave FSU than it is that they could.

MINUS Jimbo and Herman, Fleck has the most upside, but a demonstrated lack of forward thinking in the Administration/AD, would never make that happen.

If we get Gundy / Fisher i'll be happy, my hopes aren't too high in regard to Aleva not fricking this up.

Don't think Saban was our 1st choice when he was hired at LSU.
