You probably don't realize it, but the 2006 Wake Forest team you mention went 11-2 in the regular season and played in the Orange Bowl on Jan 2nd. There are plenty of other choices to make your point. Wake Forest shouldn't be one of them.

The problem for me is that the conditions do not exist for him to be able to assuage the concerns I have about his ability to manage a team long term. How can he prove he can manage a team long term in the short term? Cannot be done.
In a nutshell that's why he wouldn't be a serious candidate if I were making the decision. It does not mean that I am not impressed by how the team has performed under his leadership. I'm saying that he has not had control over the team long enough for his flaws to manifest themselves, and that may still be the case at the end of the season.
