Head Coach at McNeese and typically runs a multiple set offense. Probably leans more towards the spread. Has had a lot of success at McNeese. Won conference and made playoffs multiple times. Seems to develop QB's nicely.

I like him too. Just a different name that hasn't been mentioned. I think he has a bright future. Just depends on who gives him a shot. Tressel was the HC at Youngstown St. for years before OSU came calling. Of course he built a powerhouse and won at least one NC.

He's ok.

I would like Ron Jaworski, the former Phila pro QB. He took a team to the NFL finals, and is pretty interesting at analyzing the passing game.
Any decent coach could go to Lake Charles and have McNeese in shape for a run at the AA tournament with the talent they get year in year out. Its a great job in a great football area.
At least Viator is presently connected with Louisiana recruiting.

It does not light my fire. McNeese has not done anything big in the AA tournament in a long time. The best part of your choice is that he is local, and could recruit SW La.
I enjoyed seeing his team vs LSU this year.
They made a game of it.
I will give it a B, you can dance to it.

Maybe someone with more national pizzaz?

I have been wondering who Miles talked to.
TD says he interviewed 3 nominees last week.

I'm not so sure about Viator. I live in LC, graduated from and follow McNeese as well as LSU. And while yes Viator has won multiple Southland conference titles, he has never really done much in the playoffs, while getting blown out in the opening round of the playoffs at home the last 2 times the team has made it into the tournament.

I think the team making the playoffs and getting beaten early by outside conference teams in the playoffs speaks more to a weak Southland conference that McNeese has been able to take advantage of rather than good coaching.

Viator is my cousin and I still think we'd be better off with an OC with Big Boy football experience. Much like our HC, we pay our assistant coaches top dollar and we can go out and get an established coach for OC. Why take a chance if we don't have to?

What part of the last few years where Crowton's spread just didn't jive with Miles' desire to plow the middle of the field makes anyone think that any of:

Billy Gonzales (entire playing and coaching career under Urban Meyer's spread);
Any "spread" option OC; OR
Any pass-every-down OC (i.e. Leach);

would be a good choice for OC? would we not get more of the same (i.e. no real identity on offense)?

I think you are right about the spread option which is why Billy G and others are not good fits. The overall spread, like Leach, IMO wouldn't be as big of a stretch. Viator has run some of both depending on his QB. I like the spread along with some multiple formations mixed in. I'm not a fan of the spread option. Crowton prob ran some of both but I think his problem wasn't necessarily his ability to draw up plays but to develop the talent at QB and/ or gear an offense around the strengths of his talent/ QB. He had a cookie cutter approach. Example was Lee running the option.

Does Matt run a pro-style offense at McNeese?

From what I have seen he runs his offense based on his skill players. Last year(2009) he run a lot of spread option b/c he has a duel threat QB. In 2010 he started with a transfer from Tulsa running some pro style with some spread mixed in but no spread option really. When Bower got hurt and Stroud took over it was similiar but with a little more spread b/c he was a true freshman. He is the QB that started against LSU. If you remember they were in shotgun most of the game mainly to give him extra time. Another issue at MSU is he hasn't had a true between the tackles RB that can run the I-formation a lot which limits the snaps in that set. I like his style b/c his seems to make adjustments base on who is playing even during the season.

Why not try and get Lark Hebert also for dc?

Could make it a package deal, I'm sure they both would take the job

Do you think money would be an issue?
I hear Matts wife really likes Lake Charles so it may be hard to get him out of there.

You are right, we have employed Crowton. They would not interview him.

Just sayin.

To not acknowledge talented coaches in the FCS would be a mistake.

Most 'name' coordinators are sitting pretty waiting for HC gigs. Others have had bouts of trouble that have them bounced around. The best bet may be an unknown. Hell look at Gus.

If you can't see that "Gus" has had an elite, once in a decade player to help his numbers on offense, I can't help you.

As far as an unknown, why don't Alleva just hire any high school coach in the state?

That's only one small notch below Viator IMHO.

If your memory of football goes back exactly to the start of this season, we do not need to discuss.

Where did you get that from? To discount everyone is as silly as including everyone. We will end up, and I promise, with an OC that has had some flashes of great things and some flashes of mediocrity, it is the nature of the game when dealing with guys with a long history in coaching.
